Everton in talks to sign Maxwel Cornet, as respected source classes them most likely takers after Chelsea link

Everton are working on a deal for Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet, who has been left out of his side’s squad for their latest pre-season fixture.

Cornet impressed during his debut season in the Premier League despite suffering relegation with Burnley. In total, he scored nine goals from 26 top-flight appearances. As such, he might not stick around in the second tier.

Burnley have already lost Nick Pope, Wayne Hennessey, James Tarkowski and Nathan Collins to Premier League clubs this summer. Cornet could be the next to tread a similar route.

In fact, he may be able to aim the highest of the lot. A report earlier this month mentioned him as someone Chelsea admire. If that move was to materialise, he would have Champions League football on offer.

However, The Athletic are now reporting that Cornet may end up following Tarkowski to Everton.

According to a report by David Ornstein, Everton are in contact with Burnley over a deal for the winger. Despite a lack of an agreement so far, the two clubs remain in talks.

Ornstein observes that Everton are not Cornet’s only suitors. Right now, though, a move to Merseyside looks the “most likely” route away from Turf Moor for the former Lyon man.

A deal may cost £17.5m, which is the value of Cornet’s release clause after relegation. He is not in the Burnley squad for Friday’s pre-season fixture against Shrewsbury.

He cost them a fee in the region of £13m when signing last summer. His contract is still due to run until 2026. It seems quite clear, though, that he has the ability to step back up to the Premier League without them.

Maxwel Cornet could be clever Everton buy

Everton have invested in their wide areas over the past 12 months. Last summer, they brought Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend to the club in bargain deals.

In January, they took Anwar El Ghazi on loan from Aston Villa, but he has now returned to his parent club.

It seems Everton remain intent on signing another winger. In that regard, Cornet could be a clever option for them to pursue.

He has previously played in the Champions League and Europa League for Lyon. After a relegation scare last season, Everton should be aiming higher this time around.

They have, though, lost forward Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur. Hence, they need to find a way to add more goals to their team, both from central and wide areas.

Cornet covered both up front and out wide for Burnley last season. Therefore, he has the versatility and efficiency that Everton are looking for.

Whether they will be able to talk Burnley into a deal, only time will tell.
