Savage truth leaves Lampard with huge Everton decisions as pundit points finger of blame

Everton need to clear the decks to give Frank Lampard the best chance of success, according to former England midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The Toffees are hoping to turn their season around after the appointment of Lampard. The former Chelsea ace has replaced Rafa Benitez in the Goodison Park hotseat with the club just above the relegation zone. The decision to recruit Benitez as Carlo Ancelotti’s permanent successor never looked like succeeding.

And the Spaniard paid the price for a dreadful run of results, losing his job on January 22 after seven months in charge. Lampard enjoyed a 4-1 FA Cup triumph over Brentford on Saturday in his first game in charge of the Merseysiders.

Forward Andros Townsend has already highlighted the impact that the ex-England schemer has had on the players. But he still has much work to do to ensure that his charges are not embroiled in a relegation fight come May.

It will then be a case of trying to shape his own team, with summer recruitment crucial. Owner Farhad Moshiri cannot be accused of failing to invest in the squad.

A recent report suggests Everton have had the fifth-highest net spend among Premier League clubs during the past five years. But it is the players that have been brought to the club that has been the problem.

There have been a few expensive flops. Alex Iwobi arrived from Arsenal for a fee in the region of £28m.

However, the Nigeria international has failed to live up to that price tag. Davy Klaassen and Theo Walcott also disappointed in blue before moving on.

And, although James Rodriguez arrived on a free transfer, the Colombia international rarely shone in his limited opportunities.

Lampard urged to jettison stars

Lampard will be given time to put his stamp on the side. His appointment was welcomed but the former Manchester City schemer knows it is all about results.

And to turn those around in the long term, Palmer can see a mass exodus.

“Even now with Frank Lampard, there’s a lot of players that need to leave Everton football club because the recruitment’s been poor,” he told GiveMeSport.

The winter window is now closed. And it was a successful one for Lampard as Dele Alli joined from Tottenham.

Left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko arrived from Dynamo Kyiv while Rangers sold right-back Nathan Patterson to the north-west outfit.

There will be departures in the summer. It remains to be seen if there are as many as Palmer predicts.
