Everton announce Sean Dyche appointment as new boss vows to ‘remodel’ entire club

Burnley manager Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche has been appointed as the new manager of Everton on a two-and-a-half-year contract, replacing Frank Lampard in the Goodison Park hotseat.

Lampard lost his job recently after a turbulent run of form, with Everton in danger of relegation. Hence, the club decided to go in a different direction. Talks were held with former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, but Dyche was always a realistic candidate.

It became clear on Friday that Dyche would be taking the job. Now, Everton have officially announced his appointment as their next manager.

The 51-year-old previously earned a good reputation for his work with Burnley, whom he left last year after a lengthy spell in charge.

Dyche has agreed to a contract until 2025 with Everton. His first game in charge will be on Saturday, when his new team host Arsenal.

Everton have confirmed that his backroom team will include assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and sports scientist Mark Howard. Each of them worked with Dyche before at Burnley.

The new staff will have to put their minds together to help lift Everton out of the relegation zone. They are 19th in the Premier League at the time of his appointment.

In the short term, Dyche is aiming to get Everton winning again. In the longer term, though, he has vowed to “change the shape” of the club, where several issues have arisen in recent years.

Sean Dyche outlines Everton task

Dyche told the club’s official media channels: “It’s an honour to become Everton manager. My staff and I are ready and eager to help get this great club back on track.

“I know about Everton’s passionate fanbase and how precious this club is to them. We’re ready to work and ready to give them what they want.

“That starts with sweat on the shirt, effort and getting back to some of the basic principles of what Everton Football Club has stood for for a long time.

“We want to bring back a good feeling. We need the fans, we need unity and we need everyone aligned. That starts with us as staff and players.

“Our aim is to put out a team that works, that fights and wears the badge with pride. The connection with the fans can then grow very quickly because they’re so passionate.

“There is quality in this squad. But we have to make them shine. That’s the job of me and my staff.

“We want to change the shape of this club going forward, remodel it in our style, but in a way that we can win. That’s the task in front of us – make sure we’re building, tactically and technically, giving players organisation, allow them the freedom to play, to go and enjoy their football because it’s brilliant when the team’s playing with a smile, but we’ve got to win.”

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright went on to explain how Dyche won over their director of football Kevin Thelwell and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

Kenwright said: “Kevin and I spent some valuable time with Sean over the past few days and he quickly convinced me that he has exactly the right attributes to make himself a great Everton manager – and a man who could inspire our fanbase. And Farhad felt the same when he met him, too.”

Everton have chopped and changed their managers quite heavily in recent years. Dyche will be aiming to be the man to provide them with some much-needed stability. But as it would have been for anyone, it will be a big task.
