Shock Nottingham Forest interest in Everton forward emerges, but transfer-obsessed Reds have big obstacle

A report has made a big claim about Nottingham Forest wanting to sign an Everton striker in the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest made headlines during the summer by bringing in over 20 players from all across Europe. They completed eye-catching moves for Jesse Lingard, Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniyi, Emmanuel Dennis and Renan Lodi.

According to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest spent a whopping £152million in the most recent transfer window. This put them up there with the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona as one of Europe’s biggest spenders.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis sanctioned the regular transfers to try and keep his team in the Premier League, following their long-awaited return to the top flight.

Manager Steve Cooper has had trouble getting the squad to gel, which is understandable given the plethora of new arrivals.

Forest sit at the bottom of the table after 14 games, having won just two of them. They were thrashed 5-0 by Arsenal on October 30 but responded by picking up a 2-2 draw with Brentford in their next outing.

And the East Midlands outfit shocked Tottenham by knocking Antonio Conte’s men out of the Carabao Cup in the third round on Wednesday night.

Reports in Italy are now suggesting Forest could have made even more signings in the summer, with one of them being a player on the books at Everton.

Report details interesting Nottingham Forest approach

As per Calciomercato, Forest launched a move to try and sign Moise Kean from the Toffees. The forward joined Everton from Juventus in August 2019 but, after a disappointing spell at Goodison Park, was put on the transfer list.

Kean is currently back on loan at Juventus, in a transfer which is due to become permanent at the end of the season. According to transfermarkt, Juve will pay Everton €30m (£26.2m) to re-sign him.

However, transfer-obsessed Forest were hoping to hijack the move in the summer. They apparently sent Everton a ‘rich offer’ for the Italian.

Unfortunately, Forest had little chance of taking Kean to the City Ground. That’s because he had no intention of joining a club outside of the ‘top tier’. Instead, Kean wanted to remain at Juve and try to make his mark in Serie A once again.

Moise Kean stance forces Everton’s hand

Due to this, Everton never really considered Forest’s bid for the 22-year-old.

It will be interesting to see whether the decision works out for Kean. He had a poor start to the campaign, failing to score in his first 14 appearances. This was partly down to Max Allegri using him sparingly and usually bringing him off the bench.

However, Kean has turned his fortunes around slightly in recent weeks. He has found the net in league victories over Empoli and Hellas Verona.

Kean is hoping these goals can kickstart his second Juve spell and maybe force Allegri to put him in the starting eleven.

The reality though is that Kean faces an uphill battle to become Juve’s main forward. Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik are also available to Allegri.

And given Vlahovic’s brilliant scoring record in Serie A, he will pretty much always be the first-choice striker while he is in Turin.

Perhaps Kean should have considered Forest’s proposal a bit more, rather than rejecting it out of hand.

Meanwhile, Everton are planning to bid for an ‘outstanding’ AFCON winner in January, according to reports.
