Sources: Audacious Everton striker swap imploded, with Dyche left empty-handed after double deal

Everton failed with a last-ditch attempt to include Ellis Simms in a swap deal for Coventry City hotshot Viktor Gyokeres, with the final outcome leaving Sean Dyche empty-handed, TEAMtalk has been told.

The Toffees consistently showed interest in signing Sweden international Gyokeres on the back of a superb campaign at club level with Coventry.

Indeed, the 25-year-old scored 21 goals in the Championship last season to help fire the Sky Blues into the play-offs.

Gyokeres scored his penalty as the final against Luton Town went to a shoot-out. However, it was The Hatters who ultimately secured promotion to the Premier League.

Holding on to Gyokeres always looked a difficult task for Coventry after their near miss in the play-offs. Everton emerged as one of many top flight sides to show interest, while Portuguese heavyweight Sporting Lisbon also entered the frame.

Now, TEAMtalk has exclusively learned Everton attempted to disrupt Gyokeres’ move to Sporting by offering Ellis Simms as a makeweight to Coventry.

However, we understand Gyokeres only had eyes for Sporting and has since agreed a move to the Primeira Liga.

Gyokeres will net Coventry €24m, though Everton’s failed swap deal did not spell the end for Simms.

Indeed, the 22-year-old then went on to replace Gyokeres at Coventry upon agreeing a deal worth an initial £3.5m.

Add-ons relating to appearances, goals and promotion to the EPL could ultimately see the final fee hit £8m.

The end result sees Sporting complete a club-record swoop for Gyokeres, Coventry land a replacement in Simms, and Everton left another man short up front.
