Everton transfer news: Double blow as deals for Walker-Peters, Cornet complicate – with one inadvertently impacted by Liverpool

Maxwel Cornet and Kyle Walker-Peters

Everton are facing a double blow after their plans to sign Maxwel Cornet and Kyle Walker-Peters did not match up with the ideas of each selling club, according to reports.

Burnley winger Cornet and Southampton full-back Walker-Peters have both been linked with Everton in recent days. The former was the subject of talks that prompted him to miss a pre-season fixture for his current employers.

Although there are other suitors for Cornet, Everton have been described by respected sources as the most likely side to sign him. A clause in his contract could lead to a Premier League return after his relegation with Burnley.

However, it appears Everton haven’t been planning to activate that clause straight away. According to The Sun, the method they used to bid for Cornet was a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

Everton wanted to take the Ivorian on loan for the season, only buying him if they secure Premier League status again by the end of it.

Burnley, though, have rejected this formula. They want to receive a guaranteed fee in the region of £18million.

Vincent Kompany’s side remain open to a sale so they can fund their own signings. In turn, Cornet could get his wish of playing in the Premier League again.

But if that is to be with Everton, the structure of their offer to the Clarets must change.

Everton quoted higher price than rivals for Walker-Peters

Another transfer saga in which Everton could be frustrated, say The Sun in another report, is their pursuit of Walker-Peters.

As reported by Alan Nixon, Southampton would now be asking for a fee of £40m if they are to sell the right-back, despite previous claims he may only cost half that.

Everton are yet to meet Southampton’s new valuation of the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster.

In fact, they would be at a disadvantage if Tottenham ever want to take Walker-Peters back. A clause would allow Spurs to re-sign him for around £30m, which is less than what other suitors like Everton will be quoted.

Southampton are holding out for a high fee after missing out on their preferred potential replacement, Neco Williams. The Wales international joined Nottingham Forest from Liverpool instead.

In turn, Southampton are setting a tougher stance for Walker-Peters’ potential exit. It could come as bad news to Everton.

Cornet stalemate could be easier to resolve

If Everton are to reach a successful conclusion in either pursuit, one would have to imagine Cornet looks more likely at this stage.

They may not be able to justify spending £40m on a full-back when their finances have been under scrutiny.

In contrast, £18m for Cornet – who scored nine Premier League goals last season – is still good business. After all, Everton have cashed in with the big-money sale of Richarlison to Tottenham.

It is understandable why they would want to spread their investment in Cornet. However, they need a Richarlison replacement and he could be good value for money still.

As for Walker-Peters, they should probably look for cheaper options elsewhere.
