Everton transfer news: Frank Lampard plans tempting offer to prise Levi Colwill away from Chelsea

Levi Colwill, Chelsea defender on loan at Huddersfield

Everton are reportedly preparing a summer approach to sign Levi Colwill from Chelsea.

The defender has caught the eye this season during a loan stint at Huddersfield, playing 30 times during Town’s push for promotion. Indeed, he is one of the first names on Carlos Corberan’s team sheet as they prepare to tackle Nottingham Forest in the play-off final.

But Colwill’s impact for the Terriers has not gone unnoticed. Lampard and his team of scouts has watched the 19-year-old in action on several occasions and are hoping to sign him in the summer.

He is due to return to Stamford Bridge after next Sunday’s game with his future very much in the open. Indeed, we exclusively revealed back in March that Colwill will get a first-team chance with the Blues next season. That’s with Thomas Tuchel impressed with the progress he has made at the John Smith’s Stadium.

However, Town will also want to keep him and plan to ask Chelsea if he can stay, regardless of what division they are in.

Much, of course, will depend on Chelsea’s own success in the transfer market this summer.

The Blues, of course, are losing Antonio Rudiger, who appears likely to sign for Real Madrid. Andreas Christensen is another who looks set to depart, with a move to Barcelona in the offing.

Tuchel is also fighting a battle to retain the services of Cesar Azpilicueta this summer. The full-back has a verbal agreement he can leave, though his future has been confused by Chelsea triggering an extension on his deal.

As a result, the Blues will make the capture of at least one new defender their primary objective this summer.

Top of their list of recruits is Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. He looks likely to leave the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium this summer with a £68.7m exit clause in his deal.

The Blues though could still offer Colwill his chance and, should he impress in pre-season, he could be offered an opportunity.

Levi Colwill ‘the new John Terry’

However, The Sun claims Lampard is also looking to lure the player away from Stamford Bridge.

He wants to help Chelsea out by taking the player on a loan agreement for the season.

Everton are beginning plans for the 2022/23 season, having secured their Premier League status.

And Lampard seemingly fancies bringing Colwill to Goodison Park on a temporary deal.

That will allow the player to develop, with the deal also potentially having a recall clause in January should he make his mark.

Colwill has been branded the ‘new John Terry’ due to similarities in his game. The centre-half also wears the No 26 shirt in tribute to the Chelsea icon.

Talking about the comparison, Colwill admits he welcomes the claim.

“I’ll take it, I’m not going to complain,” he said. “It’s no bad thing to be called the new John Terry.

“I haven’t made the comparison myself so the fans and media can make whatever comparisons they want to make. It isn’t going to affect me.

“John Terry is a club legend and leader, someone every centre-back at Chelsea should look up to. A great guy and player.”

Lampard has good reputation for developing Chelsea youngsters

If Chelsea can afford for Colwill to depart on loan again, a move to Everton would make a great deal of sense.

Lampard has shown the way in the past for helping develop Chelsea’s best young talents on loan.

Indeed, he took both Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori during his time at Derby, giving them the experience they needed.

Mount is now, of course, a Chelsea regular, while Tomori departed in a £25m deal to AC Milan.

Lampard also gave Tammy Abraham and Billy Gilmour the chance to impress during his time at the Bridge.

Colwill be well aware of his ability to develop young stars and help push their careers to the next level.

Meanwhile, Everton may face a new battle to keep Richarlison in the wake of the Kylian Mbappe news overnight.
