Everton transfer news: Lampard looking to hijack Wolves deal for Atletico Madrid forward

Matheus Cunha, Joao Felix, Atletico Madrid, October 2022

Everton are reportedly interested in signing forward Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, although any deal is likely to be a loan to buy.

The Brazil international is fully expected to quit the LaLiga giants in the January transfer window after a lack of game time under Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.

Indeed, his lack of regular action saw Cunha miss out on a place in the Brazil squad for the World Cup.

Wolves are currently thought to be in discussions with the player. Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are also in the mix for his signature.

A report from 90min claims that any deal will be an initial loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

The report adds that Cunha is keen on working alongside new Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui, although no deal is done yet.

Toffees boss Frank Lampard is known to want another forward to give him more firepower, particularly given Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury issues and Neal Maupay’s struggles in front of goal.

Both players have only netted a goal each so far this campaign, with Everton sitting only a point outside the relegation places.

Adaptable Cunha can play in deeper role

Cunha, who has also been linked with Manchester United and Leeds in the past, does not have the best of goal records himself, with only 39 in 178 games. However, he does have the ability to play slightly deeper as a No.10 and as more of a creative force.

It now remains for Toffees transfer chiefs to convince Cunha to ignore moving to one struggling club to another in the fight for Premier League survival.

Everton are back in action on Boxing Day when they face a crunch clash with Wolves at Goodison.
