Leeds shortfall in Arnaud Kalimuendo transfer hunt revealed after £17m Victor Orta offer fails

Arnaud Kalimuendo, Lens v Monaco January 2022

Leeds United are just £4million short of Paris Saint-Germain’s valuation of French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, according to a report.

The Whites have bolstered significantly already this summer, partly to advance Jesse Marsch’s side but also to replace key players. And after the arrival of midfielders Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams, the focus has turned to attack.

While midfield talisman Kalvin Phillips has joined Manchester City, star winger Raphinha is the subject of a transfer tussle between Chelsea and Barcelona.

As such, former Feyenoord winger Luis Sinisterra has moved to Elland Road. But Leeds boss Marsch wants more attacking reinforcements and has his eyes on PSG’s Kalimuendo.

Previous reports claimed that the Whites have had a £17million bid rejected by the French giants for the player.

According to the latest from L’Equipe, though, PSG only value Kalimuendo at the slightly higher price of £21million.

Leeds, led on the transfer front by director of football Victor Orta, could therefore look to bump up their offer to get their target.

Kalimuendo has impressed at Lens in recent times. However, he now faces the prospect of battling with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for PSG game time.

The 20-year-old scored eight goals and assisted six others in his first season with Lens in the 2020/21 campaign.

Last term, meanwhile, he did not assist any goals but netted 13 times, an improvement on his previous tally.

Kalimuendo signed a new PSG contract ahead of his first spell in Lens and has two years left on those terms. However, PSG are willing to listen to offers for the rising star – at the right price.

As well as starring domestically, Kalimuendo is now a regular France Under-21 international. With 12 caps under his belt, he has appeared in each of the last 11 matches for his country since September 2021.

Kalimuendo could provide Leeds goals

If Leeds are to be more successful next season, another attacking signing on top of Sinisterra would be ideal.

Leeds need to add more goals to their team ahead of as they look to stabilise following a major relegation scare. They scored 42 times in the Premier League last season – not the worst record in the division but by far not the best either.

And it is also the share of goals across the team which prompts their need for more goals.

Raphinha top-scored for Leeds with 11, with second-placed Jack Harrison close by on 10.

Below the pair, though, Rodrigo – on six goals – was the third-highest scorer.

Leeds need more goals next season and Marsch will hope Sinisterra and another attacking signing can spur them on. The Whites are also actively interested in Club Brugge forward Charles de Ketelaere.

But as well as the goals, Leeds need their new midfield signings Aaronson and Adams to gel with their fellow fresh faces further forward too.
