Bielsa feeling the heat as report outlines Leeds main option to replace under-fire boss

Jesse Marsch RB Leipzig 2022 TEAMtalk1

Former RB Leipzig manager Jesse Marsch is reportedly still near the front of the queue to replace Marcelo Bielsa with pressure mounting on the Leeds boss.

Bielsa, 66, has been in charge at Elland Road since June 2018, leading the Whites back to the Premier League. The Argentinian guided his charges to ninth place in 2020-2021 – their first campaign in the top flight for 16 years. Praised for an attacking, all-action stye, things have not gone to plan this term.

Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham means the West Yorkshire outfit have picked up just one point from their past five games. And they are hovering just above the bottom three, with 23 points from 26 games played.

There is no question that Leeds are involved in a relegation fight, with clubs around them starting to pick up points. Despite conceding 16 goals in their last four league games, it is unlikely that the manager will change his style.

And rumours persist that the former Argentina coach is now on borrowed time. Should he be jettisoned, then Marsch is a leading candidate to take over, according to The Athletic.

It was thought that the club would wait until the summer to make a change. But the current run of results and looming relegation battle means they may take action sooner.

There will be no shortage of candidates ready to fill the vacancy but one man may already be in their sights.

Marsch the man for Leeds revival

Marsch made 200 league appearances for Chicago Fire while also playing for the now defunct Chivas USA. He moved into coaching with the USA national side, acting as assistant before taking over as manager of MLS outfit Montreal Impact.

Three years at New York Red Bulls followed before moving to Salzburg in the summer of 2019. The 48-year-old guided Die Roten Bullen to back-to-back league and cup doubles before leaving for RB Leipzig in July last year.

The Wisconsin-born tactician last only four months with the Bundesliga side, winning just eight games in all competitions. He was sacked in December last year and is still on the lookout for his next club.

He has been linked with the Leeds job and spoke out about the situation earlier this week. Leeds may come calling as the American is still highly rated in the game despite his Leipzig woes.

Bielsa is a popular figure at Leeds but club officials know that will count for nothing if they are relegated.
