‘Casting complete’ as Xavi considers raid to bring Leeds United man to Barcelona

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has made Barcelona’s shortlist as they look to sign suitable cover for current number one Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer.

It is not the first time the 22-year-old has been linked with the Catalan giants and the rumours refuse to go away. There is no smoke without fire though and Barca have put Meslier on their list of targets. Now it just remains to be seen if an offer will be made.

Barcelona have been casting their net far and wide as they attempt to bring in a new goalkeeper. And their search has stretched as far as Elland Road with Meslier a target.

Not for the first time the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo have talked up the possibility of Meslier joining Barcelona. Last month they claimed the youngster was among the goalkeepers that Barca were targeting.

And in Wednesday’s edition they say Barca have whittled down their list and the Leeds stopper has made the cut.

Leeds United braced for offers

Now the shortlist has been drawn up. And Mundo Deportivo say Barca will step up their attempts to sign one of the chosen few. So it looks as though Leeds could be taking phone calls from Barcelona in the very near future.

The call could be given short shrift.  Leeds remain determined to keep hold of their most important players, such as Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.

Meslier also falls into that bracket. As such, if they were to entertain the idea it would take a monumental bid from Barca to get the deal done.

There is no mention of the size of the fee in the report but it it would need to be big. Meslier’s contract at Elland Road runs until 2026, meaning they will not have to sell anytime soon.

Even so when a club like Barcelona come knocking players stand up and take notice. Meslier would have settle for a bench role at the Nou Camp but it only takes an injury to Ter Stegen for an opportunity to present itself.

Meslier could be viewed as the long-term replacement for Ter Stegen, but the German is only 29. It means Meslier could have a long wait before he gets the gloves and may prefer to be number one with Leeds.

Barcelona have options

Barcelona do have other options and Meslier is joined on the shortlist by a host of top quality keepers.

Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski, Maarten Vandevoordt of Genk and Morocco international Bono, who plays for Sevilla, have also been mentioned.

Even if the Nou Camp outfit turn to one of those keepers, Leeds could have to fend off interest from elsewhere. Liverpool have been heavily linked in the past and there is sure to be interest from elsewhere.

Meslier continues to shine despite the fact Leeds have leaked 61 goals this season. That is more than any other Premier League side, yet Barcelona have not been deterred.
