Leeds Utd transfer news: Cody Gakpo approach primed with source revealing fee and claiming star open to move

Leeds United will reportedly step up their attempts to bring Cody Gakpo to Elland Road in the coming days, amid claims he is very much on the club’s transfer radar.

The Whites have already been extremely active in the summer market, bringing in three new signings to date. After dicing with relegation and only surviving on the last day, Leeds almost learned the hard way at why a bigger and better squad is imperative.

To that end, Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca have arrived for combined fees of £45m. However, there will be departures at Elland Road too. Talismanic midfielder Kalvin Phillips is on the verge of securing his move to Manchester City.

And star man Raphinha continues to attract attention. Leeds are seeking a giant fee for the Brazilian with talks with Arsenal scheduled for later this week. To that end, a report claims Raphinha has been left with two choices with Barcelona now dropping from the running.

The exit of Raphinha will certainly leave Leeds with a sizeable hole to fill. However, reports emerged last week that PSV winger Gakpo was a top-drawer replacement they were looking at.

The Netherlands winger has just enjoyed a stupdendous 2021/22 season. He scored 21 times, laying on 15 assists to earmark him as one of Holland’s most deadly attackers.

That form has, predictably, led to plenty of interest with Chelsea, Tottenham and even Arsenal among his suitors.

Cody Gakpo asking price emerges

But it seems that it is Leeds planning the first move if reports in Eindhoven are to be believed.

As per Dagblad, Leeds are very much keen on his signing and ‘perservering’ with the chase.

They state the winger is likely to leave PSV this summer, with Leeds at the forefront of that chase. And while they state PSV are not wanting to sell, they will reluctantly listen to offers around £34m (€40m).

Furthermore, they claim Gakpo is willing to listen to the Leeds approach, though claim the player may have set his sights a little higher. Presumably, that means he wants to sign for a club who can offer him European football.

However, the paper claims Gakpo is willing to hear what Leeds have to say and is open to a move with a meeting planned ‘in the coming days’.

The report adds that Leeds are ‘charmed’ by Gakpo and are willing to invest a large part of their prospective Raphinha windfall into his signing.

That said, they do claim Leeds’ hopes may ultimately rest on the quality of the other bids that come in for him.

The Whites though, it’s stated, are willing to do ‘everything in their power’ to convince Gakpo to move to Elland Road.

Leeds aiming high this summer

If Leeds United can secure the signing of Gakpo it would be a massive feather in their cap.

While Raphinha arrived two summers ago as a virtual unknown, the same cannot be said of Gakpo. Indeed, the departure of Raphinha will leave Leeds with a huge hole to fill.

Gakpo, however, is one such star who is capable of doing that.

The 23-year-old – capped seven times by the Netherlands – is also the reigning Eredivisie Player of the Year. He recently became the first PSV star to scoop the award since 2015, when Georginio Wijnaldum received the honour.

Like Raphinha, he is a player of sublime quality, capable of beating a man and someone who people happily pay to watch. He also takes a mean free-kick too, proving he knows his eye for goal.

If Leeds can offload Raphinha, sign Cody Gakpo and make a profit, it will certainly be seen as some shrewd business by the club.

Leeds, meanwhile, are also reportedly locked in a battle with a Premier League rival for Bordeaux marksman Alberth Ellis.
