Leeds Utd transfer news: Daniel James subject of surprise link with contact made on loss-making exit

Leeds United winger Daniel James

Leeds United winger Daniel James is facing an uncertain future after reports suggested Serie A side Atalanta have initiated ‘contacts’ over his transfer.

Leeds are currently at risk of losing their Premier League status after fellow relegation battlers Everton reigned victorious over Crystal Palace on Thursday. The club are favourites to be relegated after just two years back in England’s top flight.

Leeds have had a less than memorable campaign this season. The Whites currently sit in 18th position on just 35 points.

Their future isn’t decided yet, with fellow relegation rivals, Burnley, also resting on 35 points. However, the Clarets’ superior goal difference ensures Leeds must better Burnley’s result on Sunday or suffer relegation.

One player who won’t be present for this Sunday’s game, however, is Daniel James. The winger is suspended after a reckless challenge on Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic produced a straight red card.

He may also not be in a white shirt next year, as Calcio Atalanta claim that Atalanta are vying for his transfer.

This comes as the prospect of Leeds being relegated is much more likely than previously thought. Leeds’ current situation is thought to ‘favour’ Atalanta’s hopes of acquiring the Wales international, the report states.

Atalanta are reportedly ready to enter negotiations over the transfer of James. With relegation in the midst, his fee is likely to be lower than the £25m Leeds paid Man Utd last summer.

The report claims that Atalanta have ‘already made contacts’ with the player through his representatives in the past few weeks.

Why Atalanta want Daniel James

In the 2020 January transfer window, Atalanta lost wonderkid Amad Diallo to Manchester United for a fee of around  £37million.

Since then, the club have failed to sign a player to fill the gap Diallo left behind. James would fit right into their vision and provide them with an extra bit of depth to support them on either flank.

Before any of this happens though, the report claims Atalanta would have to conduct an ‘in-depth evaluation and analysis’ to ensure the 24-year-old is the right player for them.

Despite this, it is also reported that Atalanta’s chief, Lee Congerton, has James on his transfer ‘notebook’. Congerton is also Welsh and is the current Head of Senior Recruitment at the Italian side.

If the Wales international was to join Atalanta, he could be a valuable addition. He may also benefit from a season or two out of the English media spotlight.
