Leeds have ‘real confidence’ of significant agreement with 29-goal winger as club’s stance on Rodrigo renewal emerges

TEAMtalk can reveal that Leeds United are growing increasingly confident they will soon be able to announce a new contract for a key member of Jesse Marsch’s squad – while the club’s stance on Rodrigo Moreno’s future can also be revealed.

The Whites have endured a topsy-turvy start to the season. Currently sat in 15th place, they have showed what they are capable of with thrilling wins at home to Chelsea and away to Liverpool. But those are just two of four wins so far, with the threat of relegation still very much lurking.

Consolidating their place in the top flight is the club’s primary aim of 2023, and after avoiding the drop in dramatic circumstances last season, the club will hope to push on when the season resumes.

With the January window just around the corner, Leeds have the chance to strengthen their squad. But with funds tight, their obvious need to sign a new left-back and striker remains in some doubt.

One man who is looking to leave is Mateusz Klich, and TEAMtalk were able to reveal last month that interest in the Pole is wide-reaching. Leeds want him to stay until the summer though when they can bring in a replacement.

As it stands, a number of Leeds players are out of contract in the next 18 months. And the club are currently deciding which of those they want to keep or move on. Much, of course, will depend on the retention of their Premier League status.

One man whose future has been in the news lately is Rodrigo Moreno.

The Spain star has 18 months to run on his current deal and is currently enjoying his best season yet at Elland Road. He has nine goals from 14 games this season, including five in his last four outings.

Leeds not rushing into Rodrigo contract decision

But as their highest-earning player, Leeds are not rushing into a decision on his future.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, revealed Leeds’ stance on his future.

“As it stands Leeds do not have plans to hand a enter talks over a new deal with Rodrigo – but he does still have 18-months left on his deal, which is substantial,” Bailey said.

“Rodrigo is the highest paid player at Elland Road, and this is a big consideration for Leeds.

“He is enjoying by far his best season since arriving at Elland Road, but he will be 33 by the time his contract expires so there is not a huge need to engage just yet.”

Jack Harrison agreement close for Leeds

Winger Jack Harrison certainly fits into the category of stars they would like to keep, however.

Harrison is now in his fifth season at Leeds – and second of a permanent stay. His deal is currently due to expire in summer 2024 and talks over his future have been ongoing for some time.

He has attracted attention from the likes of Newcastle, with Eddie Howe strongly tipped to launch a £35m bid for the 29-goal Leeds winger.

TEAMtalk, though, can reveal that Harrison is close to agreeing an extension with Leeds.

Bailey added: “There are other contracts that need to be looked at before Rodrigo, with Jack Harrison an ongoing situation.

“Unlike Rodrigo, Harrison has strong interest elsewhere and the club rejected big money from Newcastle United in the summer stating their intent to keep him.

“And I understand a new deal is firmly on Victor Orta’s agenda. The good news is there is a real confidence that Harrison will put pen to paper sooner rather than later.”
