Joel Piroe of Swansea City is a target for Leeds

Leeds United are reportedly on the cusp of signing Swansea City striker Joel Piroe after a firm source claimed they had settled on a £12m deal for the Dutchman.

The Whites have seen 12 players jump ship since relegation from the Premier League, leaving new manager Daniel Farke having to make do with something of a patched-up squad. Indeed, during their last game – a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom – Leeds were only able to field seven substitutes, two of which were goalkeepers.

However, it seems the club are now on the verge of summer signing No 5 – and their biggest new arrival since relegation to boot. Indeed, we reported on Wednesday how Leeds were keen on a raid for 24-year-old striker Piroe.

The former PSV frontman has a formidable record in the second tier, scoring 44 times in his 92 appearances for Swansea since moving to the Liberty Stadium.

However, Piroe’s three-year deal in south Wales is due to expire next summer. And despite the Jacks’ best efforts to extend his stay, the striker has made clear his refusal to commit to a new contract.

As a result, a number of clubs have been hovering over his signature, with Championship newcomers Leeds and Southampton leading the charge.

Indeed, Saints looked to be in the driving seat given they are managed by his former Swans boss Russell Martin.

However, it is Leeds who have made the first move and the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones reports Leeds have now struck a £12m agreement for his signing.

He writes that Leeds have been in talks over a potential deal since Monday, with the breakthrough now arriving for the Whites. Farke’s side opened the bidding with an £8m offering, but have now seemingly settled on a package worth £4m more than that.

Leeds hope to wrap up Piroe deal as Swansea boss makes admission

With Leeds now agreeing a deal with Swansea, they will now hope the player himself sanctions the move. Until he signs on the dotted line, however, Leeds will be wary of seeing their move gazumped, particularly amid claims that Premier League interest could yet arrive from either Everton or Bournemouth.

Nonetheless, Leeds are firmly in the driving seat after reaching agreement with their Championship rivals.

Discussing their chances of keeping Piroe, Swansea boss Michael Duff admits there are two scenarios open for his prized asset.

“I imagine he’ll either sign a deal or he’ll be sold,” Duff said, as per Wales Online. “I don’t envisage the club letting him run his contract down, because I don’t think it would make economic sense.

“There has been conversations with Joel. It’s not a case of ‘I’m not signing a contract’. There has been a dialogue between the club, his agent, and Joel. Where that’s at, I don’t know.”

Leeds look for busy end to summer window with four deals eyed

Asked about claims Leeds have agreed a deal, Duff added: “I don’t know if they’ve tabled a bid or not. I’m the same as everyone else. Things will happen quickly at this stage of the window now, because they have to.

“If the board and Paul (Watson) make that decision, we’ll react to it. So as far as I’m aware, it’s a no at the minute. But I don’t know if anything’s happened or anything’s happening. Obviously it’s first thing on Thursday, so I’ve not met any of the players or anything like that yet.

“There’s a week left. There’s one game left between now and when the window shuts. So one way or the other there’s going to be clarity anyway.

“It’s not ideal that it’s rumbling on this long, no. But I’m not in control of that part of it.”

Farke’s side hope to make at least four more signings before the slams shut in eight days time. In addition to Piroe, Leeds are also closing in on a deal for Rangers midfielder and are also chasing Stoke left-back Josh Tymon.

They also want a new No 10, though an ambitious move for Bayer Leverkusen star Nadiem Amiri has seemingly fallen through.
