‘Considering the circumstances’ – Meslier hints at Leeds return timescale and lauds comeback

Illan Meslier has said that he hopes to return to Leeds United action “soon” following his injury withdrawal in the stunning win over Wolves.

The Whites came through heaps of adversity on Friday night to come from behind and win 3-2 at Molineux. Not only were the visitors 2-0 down at half time, but they also suffered an injury nightmare.

Four players including Meslier came off with injury, with Leeds able to use a concussion substitute for Mateusz Klich.

Elsewhere, Patrick Bamford and Diego Llorente came off in the first half. French star Meslier followed his Leeds team-mates in the 54th minute.

He left the field holding his thigh after a clash with Raul Jimenez. The Wolves striker received a second yellow and a subsequent red, which factored in the hosts’ implosion.

Meslier wrote on his Instagram page: “Thank you for all your messages! I am doing well considering the circumstances.

“The comeback and the victory of the team make the pains less. I am in good hands and hope to be back on the pitch soon.”

Bamford’s injury withdrawal proved to be emotional for the 28-year-old. He has only recently returned from a lengthy lay-off and was in tears after leaving the field.

Still, like Meslier, he will have been lifted by Wolves’ remarkable Premier League comeback.

Jack Harrison got the first back for Leeds after 63 minutes. Three minutes later, Rodrigo stunned Molineux and made it 2-2.

However, Luke Ayling had the last laugh when he put the Whites ahead after one minute of second-half stoppage time.

The result is a second win in a row for Leeds, who have given their hopes of staying up a massive lift.

They have claimed two league wins in a row once before this season – back in January – but the recent form has been much-needed after the spell of heavy defeats which cost Marcelo Bielsa his job as manager.

Jesse Marsch has stepped into the dugout and, despite a slow start himself, he has turned the tide.

Friday’s result moved Leeds seven points clear of the relegation zone and 18th -placed Watford. And both sides have to play each other at Vicarage Road after the international break.

Still, Everton an Burnley both have three games in hand which could put Leeds back in danger.
