Jesse Marsch gives big update on Phillips, Cooper ahead of Saints clash; Bamford timeline for Leeds return

Kalvin Phillips of Leeds

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has revealed that one of Kalvin Phillips or Liam Cooper will start Saturday’s crucial Premier League clash against Southampton.

The duo have been building up their fitness over the current international break after injury lay-offs. However, Marsch is wary of starting both of them against Ralph Hassenhuttl’s men.

Phillips and Cooper were both unused subs in Leeds‘ thrilling 3-2 win at Wolves last time out but are expected to see some on-field action this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the game, Marsch said: “They’re both in contention to start, they’re both probably not 90 minutes but we’re close. I don’t think we can start both of them but we’ll think very carefully.

“I’ve spoken with both already and they’re feeling good and looking better. We’re really excited to have them in the group. They can have a massive impact.”

Marsch also spoke about Patrick Bamford’s latest injury blow, adding: “He is an energetic, positive person. Part of the disappointment is because he was so committed to helping the team.

“It is difficult for him to handle.

Bamford on target for final two games

“Six weeks means he can make the last two matches. I think he can be available for the last two matches. He is walking better, is pain free which he hasn’t been for the last four months. So we are optimistic.”

Other injury news ahead of Saturday’s game sees Leo Hjelde (knee) back in training, but Jamie Shackleton (calf) is still out.  Junior Firpo is also ‘getting closer and closer’ and is ahead of schedule in his return.

Attacking talisman Raphinha has recovered from Covid after missing the Wolves clash and is expected to feature at Elland Road.
