Leeds waiting on player departure before signing Ismaila Sarr, with Watford negotiations now ‘advanced’

Watford ace Ismaila Sarr

Leeds United are reportedly close to signing Ismaila Sarr from Watford and are waiting on a player’s exit before securing the deal.

Sarr is expected to leave Watford before the summer transfer window closes. He has proven he is able to cut it in the Premier League and is clearly too good for the Championship, along with Watford team-mates Emmanuel Dennis and Joao Pedro.

This is shown by Sarr’s quick start to the new campaign. He set up Pedro for the winner in Watford’s Championship opener against Sheffield United.

He went one further in the Hornets’ 1-1 draw with West Brom on Monday. The winger, who can also operate at centre-forward, embarrassed Baggies keeper David Button by scoring from inside his own half.

Sarr would like to go back to the Premier League if such an offer came about. According to 90Min, Manchester United are considering a move for him as they look for Marko Arnautovic alternatives. But it is Leeds who have taken steps to bring Sarr back to the top flight.

According to transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, Leeds have opened dialogue with Watford over the attacker’s signing. And those talks are now in an ‘advanced’ stage.

The Whites have put a bid worth £23.6million on the table. And it seems Watford are willing to accept this offer.

The Hornets have previously valued Sarr at £40m, amid rumours of Liverpool interest in the Senegal international. However, they will now have to accept less following their relegation to the second tier.

Leeds offer Ismaila Sarr long-term deal

Leeds are clearly confident of capturing Sarr as they are preparing a five-year contract for him.

French outlet Foot Mercato provide their take on the talks. They state Leeds are close to completing a deal for Sarr and are also in discussions with his agent over personal terms.

They reinforce the fact Sarr has been in ‘high demand’ this summer, and now it is Jesse Marsch’s team who are on course to win the transfer race.

Foot Mercato claim Leeds will need to sell a player before Sarr can arrive at Elland Road. This will allow them to free up space on the wage bill for the 24-year-old, as well as free up space in the squad.

However, the report doesn’t reveal which players are under consideration to be let go. Mateusz Klich is one player who could leave amid his worry over game time this season.

Sarr would be an impressive signing for Leeds. He is a versatile forward with the ability to play anywhere across the front three.

Leeds need players with trickery and pace after losing Raphinha to Barcelona and Sarr has both of these traits.

Plus, landing Sarr for £23.6m makes sense for a club of Leeds’ size. If he impresses at Leeds and one of the Prem’s ‘Big Six’ teams come in for him, then the Whites will surely make a profit on him.

Meanwhile, Juan Mata has rejected several ‘important offers’ recently and Leeds are now in a good position to bring him into their squad.
