Jesse Marsch hails ‘big returning presence’ in Leeds side after Palace draw; sends warning to Man City

Jesse Marsch was thrilled to have Kalvin Phillips back playing 90 minutes for Leeds after the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, but also had a warning for Manchester City ahead of Saturday evening’s clash.

Leeds moved a point further away from the relegation zone after a lacklustre goalless draw at Crystal Palace, who looked the more likely to score in a game short on quality but not lacking in desire.

The best of the chances fell to Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, but he was unable to find the net or really test Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Leeds remain in 16th position, now five points clear of 18th-placed Everton, and Palace were able to bring an end to their three-match losing streak in all competitions, but remain in 14th.

Speaking after the game, Marsch told BBC Sport: “It wasn’t our best night, however, a recipe of not losing and finding a way to pick up points, we will take the positives.

“We need to find ways of being a bit more dangerous, but a clean sheet and a draw is a big, big positive.

“Kalvin Phillips is a big presence in our team and a big boost to have him back. I thought both teams fought for the points but it was respectful.”

Marsch relishing Man City challenge

Current Premier League leaders are next up for Leeds when they head to Elland Road on Saturday evening and Marsch insists his side will not hold back against Pep Guardiola’s men.

He added: “The pressure was always going to be big no matter what. The challenge against Manchester City is like no other.

“We are excited for it and will play brave, but I know how good City are, they are the best team in the world.”
