Kalvin Phillips transfer latest: Rio Ferdinand warns star police would get involved if he joined Man Utd

A Kalvin Phillips transfer to Mancheste United can categorically never happen, for fear of putting his family in danger, claims Rio Ferdinand.

The homegrown star is one of the best-known players at Leeds thanks to his progression into the England ranks. However, with Leeds struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League, speculation is growing over a summer exit.

Indeed, a number of clubs are reportedly readying approaches for the 26-year-old. He remains on a relatively low salary at Elland Road and talks over an extension have seemingly ground to a halt.

And with two years left on his deal, Leeds know they will earn maximum value for the star this summer.

There remains hope he could yet stay if Leeds stay up. As things stand they are a point clear of the relegation zone with a match left. But Burnley could yet usurp them, especially given they have two games left to play.

Either way, their fate will be decided on Sunday as the Premier League season draws to a conclusion.

As for Phillips, the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are all understood to be admirers.

He’s also being strongly linked with a move across the Pennines to Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag is known to be on the lookout for midfield reinforcements as he begins work at Carrington. With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic just two of 12 possible departures, the Red Devils will need a raft of new signings this summer.

And that has seen them strongly linked with a £50m swoop for Phillips.

That’s a move though that few have made over the years. And the transfer to their arch-rivals would certainly be a controversial one.

Police would get involved

Given his popularity at Leeds, that’s a transfer that Ferdinand reckons he cannot make.

He himself made that move back in 2002 – and the former Leeds man has recalled the advice he received from police at the time.

“Kalvin Phillips don’t go to Man United,” he told his Vibe with Five podcast.

“This is the difference between me and him, he’s a Leeds boy. He can’t set foot back in Leeds [if he goes]. His family have to move out, if he goes to Man United. Trust me.

“I had the head of Yorkshire police ring me when I left for Man United and said, ‘don’t come back for a while’ and I was only there for 18 months.

“Kalvin is a top player, he ain’t going to Man United.

“If Kalvin Phillips goes to Man United… boy. He’s a brave man.”

Kalvin Phillips transfer leaves star in a tricky situation

Were Leeds to go down, there’s not a fan at the club who would expect a player of his quality to stay to play in the Championship.

However, if Leeds Utd survive, it would be gut-wreching to see him join a team such as Villa, Newcastle or West Ham.

While West Ham have enjoyed an excellent season, from the outside looking in, none of that trio hold much appeal.

It’s a different story, however, if a club from the top six comes in for him.

Of course, a move to one of those clubs would see Phillips challenge for trophies and potentially playing in Europe. It would also consolidate his place in the England squad. Leeds fans would probably not begrudge him of that if the chance came around.

Kalvin Phillips deciding on next move

Kalvin Phillips is deciding on his summer move as Leeds United stay seems unlikely

But with the star also making clear his disliking of Manchester United, that leaves Phillips with very few options.

Liverpool and City don’t appear interested, while Arsenal and Tottenham only get passing mentions.

Perhaps the one move that might tempt the player though is Villa. They have serious funds to spend this summer and appear a club on the rise under Steven Gerrard.

They also have a long-standing interest in the star, having tried to nab him from Leeds back in 2019.
