Leeds Utd to lose another star on loan with Wolves deal to prompt activation of clause

Maximilian Wober is the latest Leeds United player who could leave the club following their relegation due to a loan clause in the contract he agreed in January, reports claim.

Leeds signed Wober from Red Bull Salzburg in January to reunite him with Jesse Marsch. Their paths didn’t cross for long, though, as the manager lost his job the following month. Neither Javi Gracia nor Sam Allardyce could subsequently halt Leeds’ slide down the table and they were relegated by the end of the season.

There have already been various departures from the Leeds squad as a result. Several players had clauses in their contract allowing them to leave on loan in the event of relegation.

For example, Robin Koch has gone to Eintracht Frankfurt, Diego Llorente back to Roma (along with Rasmus Kristensen), Brenden Aaronson to Union Berlin and Marc Roca to Real Betis.

Now, various reports in Germany are revealing that Wober could also leave Leeds after just 19 appearances in half a season.

According to Meczyki, the 25-year-old has become a target for Borussia Monchengladbach, who may sell Nico Elvedi to Wolves.

In that case, they would need to source a replacement at centre-back. Given the relative ease of the operation, they have turned their attention to Wober.

Fussball Transfers and the German version of Sky Sports are also suggesting Wober could go to Gladbach in the likely event of Elvedi leaving.

Wober was not in the Leeds squad for their friendly loss to Monaco on Saturday. It might have been an indication that his future could lie elsewhere.

Indeed, after the match, Daniel Farke confirmed: “Yes, it has to do with the transfer situation and also the contract situation.

“We will await what the outcome is over the next days, but that’s the reason he wasn’t involved today.”

Wober on shortlist of Farke’s former club

For the time being, Gladbach – who just so happen to be Farke’s former club – are mulling over a couple of other options in addition to Wober.

Both Fussball Transfers and Sky name Jordan Torunarigha from Gent as a player under consideration. The first source also puts Felix Uduokhai from Augsburg into the equation.

However, some form of negotiations seem to be underway with Wober, who can play as a centre-half or left-back.

Wober is due to be under contract at Elland Road until 2027. However, it appears he may have an escape route available to him in the coming weeks.

Elvedi, meanwhile, may be set for his first taste of Premier League football after eight campaigns in the Bundesliga.

Wolves managed to retain top-flight status last season after Julen Lopetegui steadied the ship. There have been rumours of them losing Max Kilman from their defence this summer, which may be why they are planning their own defensive investment.
