Leeds United are reportedly losing the battle to sign Mohamed Camara from Red Bull Salzburg with Premier League rivals Brighton seemingly at the front of the queue.
The Whites are seeking a replacement in midfield for talismanic star Kalvin Phillips. The England man is on the verge of a move to Manchester City with the Blues agreeing close to a £50m package with Leeds. While Phillips has missed a chunk of games for Leeds, his departure leaves Jesse Marsch and Co with a sizeable hole to fill.
United, though, are already looking a number of candidates to step into Phillips’ shoes.
To that end, reports are indicating they are looking into a deal for Red Bull Leipzig star Tyler Adams. The American star is well known to Marsch, having starred for him twice already. And with the Bundesliga side seemingly willing to sell, a deal does not look difficult to secure.
However, Leeds may be setting their sights higher and Mali midfielder Camara is also under consideration. He would come with a higher fee than Adams, with a deal likely to set Leeds back anything between £17m and £25m.
But the 22-year-old is seen as a better fit, a more skilful player and more suited to the Premier League. Compared to N’Golo Kante, the Salzburg star looks a genuine steal.
Brighton leading transfer chase
However, Leeds are not alone in their admiration for Camara. To that end, Premier League rivals Brighton are also in the running to sign him. They are seeking a replacement of their own following the exit of Yves Bissouma to Tottenham.
Now The Athletic have weighed up both sides’ chances – and it seems the Seagulls are in the box seat.
The report read: ‘Given Marsch’s past – and the signings of Aaronson and Kristensen from there already – the temptation is to shop exclusively in the Red Bull network. Tyler Adams and Mohamed Camara, from RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg respectively, have already been linked and would both make sense as signings.
‘Camara is the better player of the two – he’s more skilful, more aggressive and a better defender. But he appears to be heading for Brighton, not Leeds.’
Leeds need to act fast to sign Mohamed Camara
With Camara recently excused from Salzburg’s pre-season training return, it is clear the player has his mind on a summer move.
And having raided Salzburg twice already this summer, the Austrians have shown themselves willing to sell their top talent.
To that end, Leeds United know there is a deal to be done here.
However, with Brighton on the scene, Leeds will have to act fast to ensure it is they who secure his signing.
By all accounts, Camara would be a really astute signing and someone who can slot straight into the Premier League. Tenacious in the tackle and a good reader of the game, the 22-year-old appears a perfect replacement for Phillips.
Brighton are also the sort of side Leeds need to look to eclipse if they are to avoid another relegation scrap. Graham Potter’s side finished an impressive ninth, some 13 points higher than Leeds.
In order to overhaul them, they may need to beat them on the transfer front too. Therefore, that needs to start by beating them to Camara.
