Kalvin Phillips in Premier League action for Leeds at Newcastle

Paul Merson has advised Kalvin Phillips to turn down any move to Manchester United after saying they have little chance of winning trophies – but has named who he can see the Leeds midfielder playing for next.

Phillips’ deal at Leeds is currently due to expire in summer 2024 and talks over an extension are taking place. However, with nothing yet finalised, the British tabloid press are strongly pushing claims that Phillips will be heading out the exit door at Elland Road.

Naturally, there is no shortage of admirers for England’s 2021 Player of the Year. As such, Manchester United are long-time suitors for the player with the Red Devils looking to bolster their midfield options.

However, Merson claims Phillips would be taking a huge risk signing for United. He’s suggested they are miles off the pace and have little chance of trophy success. Furthermore, he states Phillips should only consider a move to Liverpool.

“Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool, not Manchester United,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“But I don’t think he takes either of those teams to another level. He’s a good player who would play every week whichever one he signs for. But not a gamechanger.

“If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window.

“And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well! That’s pressure.

“It all depends who the manager is by then as well. United are miles behind Liverpool. Unless they change the manager, he’s not winning trophies there.

“I think he plays every week for either club, personally. But I don’t think it will just be those two teams after him. If Leeds sell him next summer there will be an auction.”

Furthermore, comments made by Phillips himself suggests any move to Manchester United looks highly unlikely.

Merson claims Man Utd should go for Rice

United have also been heavily linked with Phillips’ England midfield partner Declan Rice.

And the pundit claims United would be better off pursuing the West Ham man.

“I honestly believe United should be trying to get Declan Rice from West Ham instead. I would be trying my hardest to get him,” Merson added.

“I’m not saying Rice is a better player but he’s a different kind of player. A proper holding midfielder. And that’s what United are crying out for. Rice ticks that box.

“With Phillips I think he’d suit Liverpool more than United. And if they are paying big money for him I don’t see Jordan Henderson playing every week.

“I’m not saying that would be the end of Henderson. He’s a good pro. Never lets you down. But he’s not getting any younger.

“I think Phillips could learn from having him around. I think Phillips would become a much better player at Liverpool.”
