Raphinha, Noa Lang respond to Summerville madness as Jesse Marsch names Leeds difference-maker

Sam Greenwood (left) and Joe Gelhardt celebrate with winning goal scorer Crysencio Summerville at the end of the Premier League match at Anfield, Liverpool

Crysensio Summerville’s winning goal for Leeds United at Liverpool on Saturday has written the player into Elland Road folklore – and his strike has prompted a response from former star Raphinha and reported target Noa Lang.

The Whites have been down in the dumps after a miserable run of form that had seen them slump to 19th in the table. Having not won a game since August 21, when they beat Chelsea 3-0, few expected them to go to Anfield and win. However, the Whites managed to come away from Anfield with a deserved three points thanks to Summerville’s 88th-minute winner.

The goal comes as some vindication for Jesse Marsch in more ways than one. Firstly, the American coach has been adamant that results have not been reflective of recent Leeds performances. To that end, Marsch offered a firm ‘sick of it’ response when questioned about the prospects of the Leeds sack last week.

Secondly, Summerville’s goal also vindicates the belief Marsch has shown in Summerville. With Dan James allowed to leave for Fulham this summer, Summerville has been the main beneficiary with eight appearances – two of which have been starts – to his name.

His strike at Anfield is actually his second Leeds goal inside a week, the player also registering in last weekend’s home defeat to Fulham.

The goal was the perfect present for the player, who was playing at Anfield on the eve of his 21st birthday.

Speaking after the game to Sky Sports, Summerville gave his reflections on his journey in the game.

“That’s right! As a young kid I played for Feyenoord. I always dreamed of playing in the Premier League. And to score at Anfield is just a dream for every kid. I can’t describe my feelings right now,” he said.

Raphinha, Noa Lang offer Summerville congratulations

“I saw it, it went quickly. When you are in the box you have to think quickly so it just happened! It’s a huge moment for me and my family, scoring at Anfield – it’s a big moment for me.”

While Liverpool are can be categorised as a once great side now turned rubbish, it is hard to take away from Summerville’s big moment.

Celebrating the win and his decisive strike, Summerville took to Instagram to share his delight.

Among the first to comment on the success was former Whites winger Raphinha.

The Brazilian, sold to Barcelona over the summer for a deal reaching £58m, always tries to watch Leeds when not in action for his current employees.

And he was clearly thrilled at Leeds’ victory at Anfield by responding with four love eye emojis.

Noa Lang was also in the comments, with the Dutch winger himself strongly linked with Leeds once again recently.

Jesse Marsch names Leeds United difference maker

Meanwhile, Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has responded to the victory on social media.

Taking to Twitter, the Leeds manager insists he’s determined to help Leeds push up the table.

“A lot was said before yesterday’s game but the commitment of the squad has never faltered. Yesterday was the reward for weeks of hard work. We know we’re not perfect and we’ve got work to do. But we love this team and this club and we’ll keep pushing.”

When questioned by a fan about his celebration, he joked: “Honestly, I have no idea [what I was thinking]. My wife has been asking me since the match what is wrong with me?!”

Illan Meslier was named Man of the Match after the win at Anfield. However, the performance of Tyler Adams also drew widespread applause.

Marsch was also delighted with his countryman’s contribition, explaining how Adams has made a huge impact at the club.

Adams missed the Fulham defeat through injury the week before and Marsch knows how important he is to the team.

“One of the best players on the pitch in almost every game. Not surprised to see him deliver like that. Tough not to have him last week,” said Marsch.
