Leeds require record bid to beat Arsenal, West Ham to exciting target

Leeds United have learned how much it will cost to sign one of their top targets after Arsenal and West Ham also reportedly joined the transfer battle.

Over the summer, Leeds made a handful of signings ahead of their second season back in the Premier League. The main captures were left-back Junior Firpo, backup goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson and winger Daniel James. They also finally signed long-term loanee Jack Harrison on a permanent basis.

But there were other areas of their squad they thought about strengthening too. For example, some felt the need for a new central midfielder. Furthermore, they continue to be linked with another winger even after the addition of James and confirmation of Harrison.

One player who has repeatedly been mentioned as a target is Noa Lang of Club Brugge. The Dutchman has three goals and five assists from 12 games in the Belgian top flight so far this season.

His promising form has continued from the previous campaign, in which he contributed 14 goals and eight assists from 24 league outings.

As such, he was already on Leeds’ radar over the summer. However, no deal could be agreed. Even so, their interest apparently remains.

According to Voetbal Belgie, the West Yorkshire outfit are in a five-way battle for Lang’s signature still. Also in contention are fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and West Ham.

Arsenal’s interest emerged last month, but the links with West Ham appear to be fresh.

Kalvin Phillips said to have choice of three Premier League clubs

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips can choose from either Liverpool or one of the Manchester clubs as his next potential destination according to reports, with more news on Noa Lang and Youri Tielemans.

The Hammers are still looking for ways to replace the creativity of Jesse Lingard in attacking midfield after his impressive loan spell last season.

The report adds that Borussia Monchengladbach would like to take him to Germany instead, and AC Milan would want him in Italy.

Record price named for Noa Lang

The key update from Voetbal Belgie, though, relates to Lang’s price. According to the Belgian source, Club Brugge want €40m (around £33.7m) to sell the 22-year-old.

Furthermore, they are only open to selling him next summer and not in January.

Under contract until 2025, the former Ajax academy prospect is expected to continue his rapid rise in the coming months. He became a full Netherlands international earlier this month, so further caps should only cement his high valuation.

Club Brugge are therefore hoping to fend off interested parties, having only made Lang’s signature permanent in the summer after a loan from Ajax. The source seems to think Gladbach in particular would struggle to compete at such prices.

And if Brugge do have to part ways with their star player, they will be able to get a record fee not only of their own history, but the entire Belgian league’s.

If Leeds were to pay €40m for Lang, it would also be a record outlay for them in the transfer market.
