Leeds told Premier League signing within Bielsa’s reach is big upgrade

Chelsea's Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Leeds would be making a very good signing if they snapped up Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, according to a pundit.

The Whites have added to their attack and defence following their long-awaited Premier League return. However, midfield is one area which boss Marcelo Bielsa has lacked signings in.

They have had interest in a number of players, including Huddersfield’s Lewis O’Brien. In fact, the payment structure was the major hurdle Leeds failed to clear for that deal.

What’s more, he has signed a new deal. As such, Chelsea midfielder Barkley is another player who has had links with a move away of late.

The Blues offered West Brom the chance to sign him in the summer, but his wages proved an obstacle.

While he has stayed at Stamford Bridge, he has only played 56 minutes across four matches this term.

One pundit recently insisted that Barkley would be a good fit for Leeds. Now, weight has been added to that claim.

Michael Dawson told Sky Sports (via Football London) during Chelsea’s 7-0 win over Norwich when asked if Leeds would be a good option for him: “Very much so.

Leeds commanding upwards of £50m for summer sale of Raphinha

Leeds commanding upwards of £50m for summer sale of Raphinha

Leeds will reportedly command upwards of £50m for a summer sale of winger Raphinha, much to the dismay of their fans, with more updates on Kalvin Phillips and Todd Cantwell.

“Barkley would be a good signing. You talked about the depth in the side, it is very small.”

Meanwhile, a report has claimed that Burnley and Newcastle are also in the race to sign Barkley.

Leeds had Barkley on loan during part of the 2012-13 season, when he was still owned by Everton. The midfielder made just four appearances in the Championship, though.

Nearly a decade on, he has experienced a range of highs and lows since. Even after his slide down the Chelsea hierarchy, he is a better player now than he was then.

Tuchel’s Chelsea message to Barkley

Speaking in September, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel threw down the gauntlet to Barkley over his game time.

The German said: “Listen, it’s very easy. If you get registered then it’s your duty to be ready. When you change in the dressing room, come here to Chelsea every day, it’s your duty to be ready. This is the baseline for everything.

“When you step into this building, step onto the changing pitches you have to be ready.

“Once you are on the list, you have to be ready. You have to train every day to play. This is the baseline. Nobody gets gifts here.”

Barkley may get more minutes on Tuesday, when Chelsea face Southampton in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.
