Leeds United transfer news: Ambitious plan comes together for £25m winger seen as dream Raphinha replacement

PSV ace Cody Gakpo

Leeds United are reportedly in contact with PSV Eindhoven over the potential signing of Cody Gakpo as a potential replacement for Raphinha.

Leeds’ star man finds himself the subject of intense speculation this summer, amid talk he has played his last game for Leeds. Indeed, with links to Barcelona now seemingly over, the Whites have reportedly stuck a massive new price on his head.

That giant new asking price has raised the small possibility of Raphinha maybe yet staying at Leeds.

That certainly is a prospect that South American expert Tim Vickery can see happening. He reckons that, in light of Barcelona’s crumbling interest, Raphinha may opt to stay at Elland Road ahead of the World Cup.

Even so, it seems Leeds United are making plans for the eventuality that Raphinha moves on.

Given the Brazilian’s importance to Leeds, his presence in the side would be a big hole to fill. The 11 goals and three assists he added were key elements of their narrow escape from relegation.

As such, Foot Mercato claims Leeds are chasing a deal for PSV flyer Gakpo.

The Netherlands winger is rated as one of the most deadly attackers in the Eredivisie. He scored 21 goals and added 15 assists during an outstanding 2021/22 campaign.

That has led to links with a number of suitors, including Arsenal and Liverpool, while Chelsea are also reportedly keen.

The Dutch club also do seem willing to sell and have set would-be suitors a minimum price of £25.8m (€30m).

And that valuation has caught Leeds’ attention with the Whites reportedly setting the wheels in motion over his signing.

Indeed, Foot Mercato goes on to claim that “an internal source from the English club” believes Gakpo is heading to Elland Road this summer.

Cody Gakpo could fill Raphinha boots at Leeds

The loss of Raphinha would be a hard one for Leeds United to take. He has lit up Elland Road for the past two seasons and been the undoubted star of the show.

Furthermore, his subsequent call-up by the Brazil national side, for whom he is now a regular, makes a mockery of the £17m fee Leeds paid.

Replacing him will be no easy feat, either.

However, Gakpo is one of the few players Leeds have been linked with that would certainly excite.

Gakpo is also establishing himself as an international with the Netherlands, having won seven caps since debuting in 2021.

Furthermore, at 23, he’s a player who is likely to get even better.

Arsenal have bid rejected for Raphinha by Leeds

Arsenal have had a bid rejected for Raphinha by Leeds United who want £65m for the winger

And while the Premier League is a step up in quality from the Eredivisie, he is one player you would back to succeed.

At just shy of £26m, Leeds could land a bargain. And if they can sell Raphinha for the £65m they are seeking, that could prove an astute piece of business by the club.

Meanwhile, further claims have been made about Kalvin Phillips, with Liverpool reportedly declining the chance to sign the midfielder.
