Leeds United are reportedly looking to nudge ahead two competitors in the race to sign Valencia star Jesus Vazquez as the club looks to fill a problem position in January.
The Whites have produced some good results this season, most notably winning at Anfield and destroying Chelsea at Elland Road. However, their inconsistencies have been plain for all to see. And with the season breaking off for the World Cup, Leeds sit in 15th, two points clear of the relegation zone.
However, with a punishing run of fixtures awaiting them after the resumption, including Manchester City and Newcastle, the Whites look likely to face another battle for survival.
One noticeable area of weakness in their side is at left-back. Leeds signed Junior Firpo from Barcelona in summer 2021, but the transfer has not worked out as planned. Firpo has struggled to accimatise to the rigours of Premier League football. And after suffering an injury in pre-season, he’s been limited to just two appearances so far in 2022/23.
As such, Leeds are reportedly giving serious thought to signing a new left-back. And TEAMtalk exclusively revealed that Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro is one such player they are looking into signing.
Competition though for the Portuguese star is strong. Furthermore, transfer journalist Dean Jones has doubted Leeds’ chances of concluding a deal. He told Givemesport: “Given the position that they’re in right now, you wonder if Guerreiro will be up for it.
“They’re trying to get someone to go into a team that looks like they might be in a relegation scrap, coming from a big club is always difficult. So, I think right now it seems like a difficult one to convince him of in January.”
Leeds chasing deal to sign Jesus Vazquez
As such, it’s little wonder to see Leeds exploring other potential options. As a result, we have taken a look at five potential left-back options for the club to consider in January.
Now, according to reports in Spain, Leeds are looking at Valencia left-back Jesus Vazquez.
The 19-year-old has come through the ranks at the Mestalla, having made 18 appearances for the first team.
And, having earned rave reviews in that time, a number of clubs are starting to take notice of his performances. Among those are Inter Milan and AZ Alkmaar, though Plaza Deportiva says Leeds United are also firmly in the hunt.
Inter are looking for a replacement for Robin Gosens, who will be allowed to move on. They are chasing Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza, though also reportedly see Vazquez as a cheaper option.
However, their plans to sign him look will reportedly be scuppered by Leeds.
Whites director of football Victor Orta is a keen admirer of Vazquez, having had his progress checked this season. And they are reportedly preparing a bid ahead of the January window opening and to beat off the competition for his signature.
Vazquez’s deal at the Mestalla is due to expire in 2025. However, a clause in his deal allowing him to leave if he does not play for a certain amount of minutes gives Leeds some hope.
As it stands, he has featured in just 149 minutes of LaLiga action this season. And Los Che are unable to guarantee him more playing time with Jose Gaya and Toni Lato ahead of him in the pecking order.
