Tyler Adams: Leipzig midfielder comes into sharp focus for Leeds Utd amid big Fabrizio Romano reveal

Leeds United are reportedly very much in contention to sign Tyler Adams this summer, with the RB Leipzig midfielder seen as a potential replacement for Kalvin Phillips.

The Whites have made a fast start to the summer window – and necessarily so. Last season’s brush with relegation is an experience no one at the club wants to repeat. As such, Leeds United have acted fast to strengthen their squad.

Indeed, the capture of Brenden Aaronson came to light just hours after safety was confirmed. The young American signing on the dotted line a few days later.

He was soon folllowed by Denmark right-back Rasmus Kristensen, with the player viewed as a long-term successor to Luke Ayling. And a deal for Marc Roca is also taking shape; the Bayern Munich man is scheduled to have a medical on Friday prior to a £12.8m switch to the club.

Leeds, however, do have fears that some of their top talents could be lured away. Raphinha continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona, though their financial issues continue to cloud their obvious interest.

In addition, rumours suggesting Kalvin Phillips will sign for Manchester City are growing louder by the day. To that end, a report claims City are hopeful they can land the England man in a deal of around £45m.

Were he to depart, Leeds would plan to try and sign a classy replacement. And that has led to speculation that USA international Adams may fit the bill.

The 23-year-old moved to Leipzig from sister club New York Red Bulls in January 2019. That move reunited him with his former coach Jesse Marsch, where the now Leeds boss was acting as No 2 at the time.

Player knows Jesse Marsch well

And while still a regular in their midfield, there is a feeling that Leipzig could cash in if the price is right.

As such, links with Leeds United are growing, with some reports suggesting a deal is being put in place.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, however, claims that nothing is agreed yet. But he does accept that he is a player that Leeds are looking at.

“My feeling is yes, he is going to leave the club this summer,” Romano told the Que Golazo Podcast.

“At the moment there is still nothing agreed with any club, but many clubs are exploring this possibility, including Leeds, but at the moment still nothing agreed.

“For Tyler Adams, he’s a name they have of course in Leeds with Jesse Marsch. It’s normal to consider him as an interesting opportunity for the midfield.

“At the moment it’s still not advanced, but to answer your question I do see Tyler Adams leaving the club this summer.”

Tyler Adams would fit Leeds United profile

Were Phillips to secure a move away from Leeds, the club would have a massive hole to fill.

However, if they are doing the right thing by putting the feelers out now to try and secure a replacement. And a move to bring in Adams – the 30-cap USA midfielder – would tick plenty of boxes.

He would know Marsch well, of course, having worked with him twice already.

He is also a teammate of Aaronson for USMNT; potentially giving Leeds’ midfield a real American feel.

Kalvin Phillips wanted by Pep and Manchester City

Most importantly, the player has the obvious qualities needed to step into Phillips’ shoes. While he may not be the hometown hero that Leeds fans love and admire, if they can secure his signing for around £25m, Leeds will be banking cash in the bank and sealing a tailor-made replacement.

At just 23 years of age, Adams can only get better too. He’s an energetic midfield, who is capable of playing in a variety of positions. And if he can adjust quickly to the Premier League, Leeds could be landing an astute piece of business.

Meanwhile, Leeds are reportedly also looking at another signing from Germany in the shape of Rabbi Matondo.
