Victor Orta leaves Leeds United shocked by finding new job just 24 hours after Elland Road departure

Victor Orta of Leeds

The Leeds United board will likely be surprised after finding out Victor Orta could get a new job at a European club just a day after his exit from Elland Road.

On Tuesday morning, Phil Hay of The Athletic revealed Leeds had decided to part company with Orta, their director of football. He had come under fire over the dissatisfying appointments of Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia, plus the questionable club-record signing of Georginio Rutter. And the legal battle associated with the transfer of Jean-Kevin Augustin has done little to help his cause.

Leeds announced Orta’s departure by mutual consent on Tuesday. Whites owner Andrea Radrizzani said he is ‘deeply saddened’ by having to part ways with the chief, though he admitted a ‘change [in] direction’ is needed to help preserve the club’s Premier League status.

Gracia has now officially been sacked as well. Leeds were briefly linked with former player Lee Bowyer as a managerial replacement, though they have since turned their attention to Sam Allardyce to keep them in the top flight.

Leeds officials will not have been expecting Orta to get a big job soon after his exit from West Yorkshire. He may have managed to bring in Marcelo Bielsa, who went on to become a Leeds legend, but a lot of his other decisions have been very concerning and have only made the team worse.

According to Spanish source Radio Stadio, Orta could surprisingly be handed a reprieve by La Liga club Sevilla. It is claimed the 44-year-old is in Sevilla’s sights as they look to replace director of football Monchi.

Orta is described as being the ‘most viable option’ for Sevilla. And there will be two reasons for this.

The first is that he is a free agent after leaving Leeds. This means Sevilla will not have to pay any team compensation to land their new director of football, should they go for Orta.

Victor Orta could achieve Sevilla return

Secondly, Orta has an existing relationship with the club. He worked for them between 2006 and 2013, eventually rising to the role of technical director. He did well as he helped Sevilla bring in several highly rated young players.

Coincidentally, he actually worked under Monchi at Sevilla, but could now be coming back to replace his former boss at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Orta will likely jump at the chance to re-join the club, who are 11th in the Spanish top flight currently.

In March, he revealed he would ‘want to return to Spain’ if such an opportunity came about. He cited several reasons for this, including his parents seeing his son more often, as well as the weather.

And Orta now looks set to be given that opportunity by Sevilla, despite enduring an often chaotic spell at Leeds.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk has been told Leeds, Leicester and Crystal Palace are all tracking the progress of a Hull star.
