Leicester City agree personal terms with sensational Serie A winger, with £30m bid ‘submitted’

Mattias Svanberg, Nicolas Gonzalez Fiorentina v Bologna March 2022

Leicester City have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Fiorentina winger Nicolas Gonzalez, in what could be a blockbuster winter transfer.

Gonzalez has been heavily linked with a move to the King Power Stadium for several weeks. But now, the only thing left to negotiate is his transfer fee.

The Italian side were allegedly demanding a sizeable fee in the region of £30million for the Argentina international. But he may be worth it if he can hit the ground running in the Premier League.

The £30million valuation is due to the fact that Gonzalez is under contract at Fiorentina until the end of the 2025-26 season, as well as him being a key player for his team.

According to Twitter transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Gonzalez, who was dropped for Fiorentina’s last game, has agreed to a contract with Leicester. They have now made a £30million bid for the player.

On Thursday, he said: “Nico González, on the bench today for Fiorentina — understand he has agreed personal terms with Leicester, talks are ongoing.

“Understand Leicester will push in the next days to get the deal done, £30m bid submitted. Up to Fiorentina.”

Since joining the Italian club at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign, Gonzalez has made 50 appearances, scoring 13 goals and making nine assists across all competitions.

This season, the winger has put in some fine performances once again, netting five times in 11 outings overall.

Gonzalez could be a valuable addition for Leicester

Goalscoring wingers have become increasingly important in the Premier League over the last few years, so he could be a smart addition for Brendan Rodgers, as he looks to make several new signings this month.

Leicester have endured a difficult start to the season, sitting just two points above the relegation zone after winning just five of their 18 opening fixtures.

With that in mind, Gonzalez could reignite their season if he can come in and chip in a few goals in the second half of the campaign.

Rodgers generally employs a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ayoze Perez and Harvey Barnes playing on the wing. While Barnes has been in decent form this season, Perez has failed to have much of an impact. So, the Foxes could make an upgrade on him by signing Gonzalez.

The 25-year-old is versatile, too, in that he can play on either flank, as well as a central striker. Jamie Vardy isn’t getting any younger, so the Argentine could fill in for him at times, along with Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho.

However, despite Leicester already reaching an agreement over Gonzalez’s contract, Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso is confident that their star man will stay at the club this winter.

Speaking to Italia 7, he said: “He plays for Fiorentina. I believe he’ll stay.

“The offers mean that our players are worth it, but we have to see what we’ll do.”

This quote came prior to Leicester’s £30m bid, so Commisso’s opinion may have now changed. However, with it being midseason, Rodgers and co. may need to make an offer in excess of Fiorentina’s original valuation to get a winter transfer over the line.
