Brendan Rodgers has revealed the ‘top’ Crystal Palace star Leicester must watch out for and provided an update on Jamie Vardy’s recovery.
Leicester host Patrick Vieira’s side at the King Power on Sunday afternoon. The Foxes will be hoping to get back to winning ways after draws in their last two matches.
Leicester did well to hold Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Kelechi Iheanacho gave them the lead before Fred equalised soon after.
On Thursday, Rodgers’ man came up against PSV in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final. It ended 0-0 in the east Midlands, keeping the tie wide open for the second leg next week.
Prior to that, Leicester will have to overcome a confident Palace team who swept Arsenal aside on Monday.
They will have to do it without influential striker Jamie Vardy, who is receiving treatment for a knee issue. However, the Foxes could soon be buoyed by his return.
Brendan Rodgers talks Vardy fitness
“Jamie won’t be back. He’s got a final injection on Tuesday and we’ll see what the reaction is to that,” Rodgers told a press conference (via Leicestershire Live).
“We’re hoping we get positive news on that. [Caglar] Soyuncu will come back into the squad, apart from that it’s the same.”
Rodgers will have to make several changes to his team following their European clash in midweek. When asked about the rotation, he said: “It’s the accumulation of games. We’ve got eight games to fit in this month.
“The same team won’t play every single game, you can’t get the same intensity if you do. The game is about energy so naturally we have to make changes. We’ll make some changes, and it will be the same for Thursday.”
Looking ahead to Palace, Rodgers noted midfielder Conor Gallagher as a particularly dangerous opponent. He also name checked several of Gallagher’s team-mates.
“I’ve enjoyed watching them. They play with a calmness, the two centre-halves are comfortable on the ball.
Conor Gallagher labelled a ‘revelation’
“Nathaniel [Clyne] I know, the young left-back [Tyrick Mitchell] has progressed. Conor Gallagher has been a revelation for them, he’s a top young player.
“Jeffrey [Schlupp] has been fantastic, a former player, he’s playing with composure. [Wilfried] Zaha has great quality, he’s now getting the ball higher up the pitch. Across the team they have done very well. They play with a good spirit.”
Rodgers then spoke about the influence of returning centre-back Wesley Fofana. “He’s a very important player for us, but you align that with Jonny Evans, one with experience at the highest level and one of the top young players.
“With Timothy [Castagne], James Justin and Ricardo [Pereira], we have balance in that backline. Other guys have done great, but these guys have given consistent performances for me.”
