Rodgers praises Leicester star who ‘typifies everything we want to be’ after win over Crystal Palace

Brendan Rodgers believes Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has brought Leicester City what they were missing after scoring his first Premier League goal in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Dewsbury-Hall set up the opening goal for Ademola Lookman in the 39th minute, before scoring Leicester City’s second on the stroke of half-time. Their lead was halved after the break courtesy of Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha converting a rebound after his own missed penalty.

However, Leicester City held on to gain an important three points. It maintains a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions for Rodgers’ side.

They have now reached the 40-point mark, which is enough for them to leapfrog the side they have just beaten. Leicester will end the weekend in ninth place and will aim to stay in the top half this season.

It has been a difficult campaign compared to the last couple under Rodgers. But now, they are rediscovering what has been setting them back in recent months. And according to manager Rodgers, youth product Dewsbury-Hall has been fundamental even before his goalscoring impact.

He told Match of the Day: “I thought we played ever so well. We started really aggressively, pressing them and scored two wonderful goals. We controlled the game with some of our football.

“At 65 minutes they get the penalty so you then expect a little bit of pressure.

“But we defended when we had to. Overall, I thought the players were fantastic.

“Ademola’s goal comes from good pressure. Kiernan has been waiting for his Premier League goal, it was a wonderful strike and he showed energy throughout the game.

“Since he’s broken into the team I felt throughout the season it was what we were missing. Just in terms of intensity. The team was missing intensity and pressure and he has brought that.

“He typifies everything we want to be. He has good industry, a cultured left foot and he’s very honest.

“You are playing against a side with really good physicality. We needed that intensity and urgency in the game and we looked to provide that from the first whistle.”

Dream come true for Dewsbury-Hall

At the age of 23, Dewsbury-Hall has had to wait a bit longer for his breakthrough than some other prospects. He endured loan spells with Blackpool and Luton Town before his integration this season.

Now, he has become a fully-fledged member of Rodgers’ squad. The reward has come with his first league goal.

He said: “It means so much.

“It’s a dream come true to score in the Premier League. I have dreamt it since I was a little boy. I have come close but I am so happy today.”

His first top-flight goal came in his 20th appearance in the competition.
