Leicester City have rejected a bid from Monaco for French midfielder Boubakary Soumare, while a report has revealed what Brendan Rodgers thinks about the player.
Soumare moved to the King Power in July last year as Leicester paid £18million for him. The transfer came after an impressive season with Lille in Ligue 1, during which they were crowned French champions.
Soumare, 23, was hoping to make a big impact for Leicester and break into Rodgers’ starting eleven. But instead he had a disappointing debut campaign.
The former France U21 international couldn’t get ahead of Youri Tielemans or Wilfred Ndidi in the pecking order.
Soumare would have been aiming to get into the side following Ndidi’s knee injury in March. However, just two Premier League appearances came his way from March until the end of the season. Rodgers preferred to use academy graduate Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall over him.
Soumare is being linked with a summer move away from Leicester, despite being at the club for just one year.
On July 1, sources in France put Monaco and Atalanta on his trail. More recently, Monaco begun talks with Leicester over taking Soumare back to France.
The Daily Mail state those discussions have led to an offer. Monaco sent Leicester a £15m bid, although this was pushed back by the East Midlands outfit.
Leicester demands for Boubakary Soumare emerge
They hope to recoup pretty much all of the £18m they paid Lille for him last summer.
Monaco are not too far away from Leicester’s asking price and should be able to agree a deal in the coming weeks. The extra £3m could be made up through add-ons, for example.
French newspaper L’Equipe provide their take on the situation. They claim Rodgers is open to letting Soumare go, as long as the money goes straight into Leicester’s transfer funds.
The Foxes are the only Premier League side yet to make a signing this summer. Letting Soumare join Monaco will boost their finances and aid them in their pursuit of Feyenoord star Orkun Kokcu.
The 16-time Turkey international is being lined up as a replacement for Tielemans, who could leave for Arsenal or Manchester United in the near future.
Leicester have got plenty of transfers right in recent years – just look at Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana and James Maddison.
But Soumare’s move is one that has not gone to plan. The midfielder has failed to have the desired impact and now seemingly wants to end his spell at the King Power.
It would make sense for Leicester to sell him as Monaco could end up giving them all of their money back.
Meanwhile, TEAMtalk understands Middlesbrough have set their price for Marcus Tavernier, with Leicester among the teams pondering a bid.
