Leicester to capitalise on Arsenal stalling, with Houssem Aouar wanted as star’s replacement

Lyon central midfielder Houssem Aouar

Arsenal-linked Houssem Aouar may end up at Premier League rivals Leicester City in the summer, as per a report.

The central midfielder has been on Arsenal’s radar since last summer. However, Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to make a formal offer to land him.

As such, Aouar is still plying his trade with Lyon in the French top flight. He has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, picking up seven goals and four assists.

Aouar, a one-time France international, has captained Lyon on several occasions this term. While his most recent goals came in the form of a brace during the 5-2 victory over Montpellier.

Aouar is clearly important to the French outfit, and their reliance on him has increased since Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle.

But the 23-year-old could follow his former team-mate to the Premier League once the summer transfer window opens.

According to Goal, who cite reports in Spain, Leicester are considering whether to make a bid for Aouar.

Recently, Arsenal got back on the playmaker’s trail – but their time-wasting means Leicester have become rivals for his capture.

Aouar’s contract runs out next year, putting Lyon in a relatively weak position. They may have to sell later this year to pick up most of his transfer value.

Of course, this is good news for Leicester or Arsenal. They won’t have to spend as much on Aouar, as Lyon’s bargaining power decreases as his deal runs down.

The original report claims the Foxes are eyeing Aouar as a replacement for current midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Like Aouar, the Belgian’s contract expires in 2023. This means Leicester are poised to lose Tielemans in the near future, with Liverpool and Real Madrid big admirers.

Aouar would be a great replacement for him at the King Power. Aouar’s sublime creativity means it’s no surprise Arsenal were tracking him for so long, and now Leicester are too.

Plus, they should pick up a decent fee for Tielemas, and this will likely cover most of the cost of signing the Lyon man.

And while Leicester have had a troublesome season, they represent a good option for Aouar. Many players have developed into top-class stars after moving to the East Midlands club.

Just look at Tielemans, James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers’ side are being tipped to replace Kasper Schmeichel with a fellow Premier League goalkeeper.
