Leicester are reportedly lining up a replacement for keeper and captain Kasper Schmeichel as they seriously consider the sale of the Denmark star.
The 35-year-old has been with the Foxes for more than 10 years. And has played almost 500 games for the club and won some major honours. But the Premier League winner is in the final year of his contract at the King Power and the club are listening to offers for him.
According to the The Sun and the Daily Mail, Nice are interested in a move for the former Leeds United loanee.
The French side need a replacement for Walter Benitez following his move to PSV. And Schmeichel, who now does not look like penning a new deal, is understood to be open to a move to France, as per L’Equipe.
New contract extension talks with Leicester were pencilled in for this summer and it appears that the two parties have agreed to part company.
Schmeichel though wants to leave on amicable terms after spending the majority of his career in the midlands.
Schmeichel’s £130,000 per-week wages make him one of the club’s highest earners. And that would free up some cash for new signings.
Rodgers has been unable to add to his squad this summer and he admitted earlier this month “we have to do some business out before we can get players in”.
Leicester are keen on a fee for the keeper, who also won the FA Cup with the club.
Greece star to replace Kasper Schmeichel?
He would of course walk away on a free transfer next summer.
As far as a replacement is concerned the club are looking at Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Danny Ward remains the back-up for Brendan Rodgers, but he is keen to bring in a new No.1
Portuguese paper Record, via Sport Witness claim that Leicester could have a decent chance of luring 28-year-old Vlachodimos.
Since the arrival of manager Roger Schmidt, the 28-year-old lost his starting place in the team. Therefore he is looking for a new challenge and would be open to a move to England.
No offers have been lodged yet for the player. But the Foxes are said to be “attentive and in place in case they need a goalkeeper”.
Benfica will want between €15m and €20m for the Greece international.
