Report discloses Leicester priority for January transfer as Inter Milan raid comes back into view

Robin Gosens celebrates with Denzel Dumfries and Stefan De Vrij

Leicester City want to land a new left midfielder in the January transfer window and are once again targeting Inter Milan’s Robin Gosens, according to a report.

Leicester were hoping to sign Gosens from Atalanta in summer 2021, along with fellow Premier League side Manchester City. Despite the Foxes apparently being ‘ready to bid’ for the wide man, they never made an official offer and he remained at Atalanta for the first half of the 2021-22 campaign.

Gosens made just six Serie A appearances for Atalanta before picking up a long-term hamstring injury. He left Bergamo in January as Inter Milan signed him on loan with an obligation to buy.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the move was worth €25million and Inter will pay Atalanta this fee in July next year. Gosens has already penned a long-term contract at the San Siro, too.

The left midfielder, who can also play at left-back, returned to full fitness soon after joining the Nerazzurri. And he played seven league matches for them last term, helping Inter to finish second in Serie A.

Gosens is struggling to make an impact this time around, however. He is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the league and was an unused substitute during Inter’s last game before the international break.

The German is also yet to register a goal or assist this campaign. This will be disappointing for the player as he was involved in plenty of goals during the height of his Atalanta form.

According to Italian source FC Inter News, Simone Inzaghi’s side are already hoping to part ways with Gosens, even though he only arrived at the club in January.

Inzaghi is preferring to use former Manchester United player Matteo Darmian on the left flank, despite the 32-year-old generally being viewed as a right-back.

This selection shows just how far Gosens has fallen. He cannot get into the starting lineup ahead of a player who likes to operate in a different position.

Inter want to make money on Robin Gosens

The report claims Inter want Gosens to do well with Germany at the World Cup in Qatar. He remains part of the Germany squad, despite his struggles at club level.

The reason Inter want him to perform well on the international stage is this will increase his transfer value. Then, they can sell him on for a bigger fee in January.

As Inter have yet to pay Atalanta for Gosens’ permanent move, it is hard to predict how a transfer away from Milan will take place.

Nevertheless, FC Inter News put Leicester on the 28-year-old’s trail. They claim Leicester’s priority is to sign a new left midfielder in the January window and Gosens is their main target.

Foxes chiefs apparently have ‘excellent’ relations with the player’s agent, which could help transfer talks to go through quickly.

Star’s move to Leicester depends on Rodgers

However, the move is dependent on Brendan Rodgers’ future. He appears to be a fan of Gosens and believes he can get the best out of the Germany international.

So if Rodgers doesn’t get the sack and stays at the King Power, then Leicester will push ahead with their Gosens pursuit. If the manager is let go, though, Leicester will void the transfer. This is because they don’t want to force his replacement into having a new signing he doesn’t want.

Leicester fans will be worried about their club signing Gosens given his recent struggles. However, he has proven himself to be a quality operator in the past and Leicester coaches could help him return to top form.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s Transfer Gossip claims Arsenal are readying a £44m bid for a classy Croatian midfielder.
