Rodgers with much to ponder as shock LaLiga link emerges for Leicester ace

Wesley Fofana Leicester

A report in Spain claims Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana is among many players that Real Madrid are interested in signing.

The 21-year-old was a big-money acquisition for the Foxes in October 2020. The East Midlanders paid Saint-Etienne in the region of £32m for the centre-back. And he enjoyed a solid first season in English football, making 27 starts among 28 Premier League appearances.

The France Under-21 ace helped Brendan Rodgers side finish fifth in the top-flight standings. But he has yet to kick a ball in anger this term after suffering a nasty injury in pre-season.

The Foxes beat Villarreal 3-2 on August 4. However, the youngster was caught from behind in a challenge from the LaLiga side’s forward Nino. He was stretchered off after suffering a fractured tibia.

The Marseille-born starlet has been linked with a move away depsite a lack of action. Manchester United were mentioned in connection with the player last October.

And he then namechecked United, Manchester City and Chelsea as his ‘dream’ future moves. He also mentioned Spanish giants Barcelona and Real.

And it seems as though the feeling is mutual with Los Blancos. Saturday’s edition of Marca, via Sport Witness, has Fofana as one of several players that the capital outfit might target.

The report adds that Carlo Ancelotti wants to sign players between the age of 15 and 21. The Leicester ace is ‘on the radar’ of the Spaniards, according to the outlet.

No immediate move for Fofana

There has also been interest from a couple of London clubs, with reports that Chelsea and Arsenal are keen. And, with that in mind, Leicester opened talks with the Frenchman over a new deal in December, according to The Telegraph.

He has signed up until the summer of 2025 but the Foxes want to improve his terms to fend off Premier League rivals. There is no mention of any timescale for Real’s pursuit or if they intend to firm up their interest.

But they will have to wait until at least February to get a glimpse of the centre-back in action. It has been a slow recovery process after surgery.

Club medics want to ensure he is totally fit before he is thrown back into action. Real are also targeting Chelsea contract rebel Antonio Rudiger.

He will be a free agent this summer and an attractive addition to their ranks. Any move for the Blues ace means they are unlikely to pursue a deal for Fofana.
