Liverpool have on their hands a midfielder of top quality in Arthur and one who compares to one of the best midfielders in the world over the last 25 years, according to Lionel Messi.
The Reds swooped to sign Arthur on a season-long loan for Juventus on deadline day. The move came out of nowehere, with Liverpool’s interest in the player only reported a matter of hours before the signing was sealed. The 26-year-old moves to Anfield until summer 2023, when the Reds have an option to make the move permanent.
According to reports from the Juventus end, Liverpool’s option for Arthur is set at £32.3m (€37.5m). That would be payable over two years if they were to take up that option.
His arrival gives Liverpool some much-needed options in an area that was emerging as a weakness. Jurgen Klopp insisted over the summer that the signing of a new midfielder was not in his thinking.
But injuries to Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago left Klopp short on options. And with James Milner and Jordan Henderson coming in for criticism, Klopp was forced to admit he would have to look.
That search intensified following the hamstring injury Henderson sustained in Wednesday’s win over Newcastle.
That leaves Klopp short on options for Saturday lunchtime’s Merseyside derby.
However, the signing of Arthur will ease that burden during a busy period over the next few months.
The midfielder will not be available to face the Toffees on Saturday, though, with international clearance not arriving in time.
Lionel Messi a big fan of Arthur Melo
However, the midfielder could debut a week today when Wolves are the visitors to Anfield.
Much will be expected of the Brazilian, who arrives with a big reputation on Merseyside. Having almost signed for Arsenal in January, his move to the Premier League is certainly a long-time coming.
Having previously played for Barcelona, he certainly made a big impression on the Argentinian during their time together at the Nou Camp.
And the player was quick to compare his style to that of legendary Barca star – and current boss – Xavi Hernandez.
Speaking in 2018, Messi said of Arthur: “Arthur, I didn’t know that much about but he seems similar to Xavi.
“He’s very safe and trustworthy. He has the La Masia style. Playing short passes, without losing the ball, and he grasped it quickly, the dynamic of the team.”
That will give Liverpool plenty of hope that Arthur will quickly make an impact at Anfield.
His signing appears a good fit for Liverpool, with Klopp himself explaining why he likes his signing ‘a lot’.
Star cannot wait to get started
The transfer to Anfield has also got Arthur himself understandably excited.
The 22-times capped Brazil midfielder is hoping to make a major impact at Anfield after underlining his pride at making the move.
“I’m really, really happy to be here wearing this great shirt with this famous badge that represents so much in world football, it’s a dream.
“We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit so I’m sure it was the right choice.
“I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt.
“Liverpool have a wonderful history in football. I’ve played against Liverpool, I know what it feels like to be in the stadium with the fans behind them,” Arthur added in his first Reds interview.
“I was with the opposition and now I’m on the right side so I’m really excited. It’s a massive club with a great manager, great players. As I said before, it’s a dream to be here.”
