Arthur Melo agent says he has ‘no doubt’ Liverpool will be surprised, amid obvious nod to Klopp

Arthur Melo, September 2022

The agent of on-loan Liverpool midfielder Arthur Melo says he expects his client to begin to play a significant role following the international break.

The Brazilian moved to Anfield from Juventus on transfer deadline day this summer after a U-turn by Jurgen Klopp. The Reds manager had insisted that he did not want to sign a new midfielder but then changed his mind.

And after suffering rejection from at least one target, Liverpool had to move down their shortlist to get Arthur.

He has only made a brief singular appearance so far, featuring for 13 minutes in Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to Napoli.

However, fellow Brazilian Alisson Becker insisted that fans will soon see the best from Arthur. And the 26-year-old hired his own fitness team to get him up to speed over the international break.

Arthur has also enjoyed run-outs for Liverpool’s Under-21s to boost his match-readiness. And according to his agent, the midfielder will now be ready to play after the international break.

“Arthur played very little last year, he then had a scheduled surgery in June, thus skipping part of the preparation,” Federico Pastorello told Calciomercato.

“He was not in [Massimiliano] Allegri’s plans, so he did not train with the rest of the team.

“Therefore it is normal that arriving on the last day in these conditions, from his point of view he needed extra work.

“Now he has recovered and is at the complete disposal of the manager. I have no doubt that he will do very well with the Liverpool shirt.”

Arthur Melo looking to prove himself

Arthur initially moved to Europe from his native Brazil to Barcelona in 2018.

But, after two years at Camp Nou, he failed to hold down a regular starting role and moved to Juventus in a swap deal with Miralem Pjanic.

Still, it was a similar story for Arthur in Turin, as two years there failed to produce anything meaningful.

Juve have therefore allowed him to move to Anfield, with Liverpool holding an option to buy him.

It remains unclear if Liverpool will activate that clause, but Arthur has reportedly agreed a potential future contract with the Merseyside club.

Liverpool man makes right decisions

Liverpool’s midfield has faced criticism this season for its lack of intensity and pressing, as well as its growing average age.

It is therefore a big chance for Arthur to take and impress alongside the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

Having said that, the Brazilian clearly had issues over his fitness before his move to Anfield.

And he has made the right decisions by getting match fitness with the Under-21s.

He did not join Liverpool at the start of the season and so has a shorter time in which to prove himself.

It was vital he got up to speed as quickly as possible and he has done all the right things to get into Klopp’s plans.

Liverpool’s form before the international break was inconsistent and Arthur will hope he can add a different dimension to Klopp’s options.
