Barcelona could scupper Liverpool hopes of landing a blow in the January window twice in quick succession after a winger target was tellingly cited on a club list, per a trusted source.
Liverpool emerged from the summer window with a small profit to show from their transfer dealings. Ibrahima Konate arrived for £36m, but that fee was more than offset by a plethora of player exits.
As such and with their rivals all strengthening, one school of thought suggests the Reds are waiting for the right time to pounce.
An ambitious raid for Barcelona sensation Pedri had been touted. However, the 18-year-old midfield maestro is poised to sign a new deal at the Camp Nou containing a historic one billion euros release clause.
The 24-year-old has struggled with injury since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2017. Nonetheless, he remains a constant threat when fit and firing.
The Frenchman is in the final year of his contract at Barcelona. That means he would be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs in January.
Liverpool were believed to be mulling that scenario, but trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has delivered a stifling update.
The Italian first confirmed details of Pedri’s impending new deal. He then claimed fellow wonderkid Ansu Fati is next in line for a new contract.
And after Fati, new contracts for ‘Gavi, Araújo and Dembélé’ will be the next to be addressed on the club’s ‘renewals list’.
While that doesn’t necessarily mean Dembele will sign an extension, it does reveal Barcelona’s intentions to tie the forward down to fresh terms if they can.
Liverpool ‘blown away’ by unlikely Leeds star
Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on a third Leeds United star. That’s after it was claimed their scouts have been ‘blown away’ by the player in question.
Per Football Insider, Liverpool scouts have a rising Leeds player very much in their sights. They report that 21-year-old goalkeeper Illan Meslier is the man making serious waves with their scouts.
The Leeds keeper was plucked from relative obscurity when signing on an initial loan from Lorient.
However, after replacing Kiko Casilla as Leeds’ No 1, he has not looked back. And after breaking Joe Hart’s record for clean sheets in the Premier League for a 21-year-old, he was rewarded with a new deal.
Now a regular with France Under-21s, Meslier is seen as the as the long-term successor to Hugo Lloris. As a result, it’s little shock to see the likes of PSG linked with moves.
However, if Football Insider are to be believed, then Liverpool have now joined the plethora of admirers for Meslier. And while Alisson is firmly established as their No 1, their scouts do line up a succession plan were a parting of ways to occur.
