Bernardo Silva: Man City star subject of shock Liverpool link, but various factors suggest implausibility

Bernardo Silva, Spain v Portugal June 2022

Liverpool have been linked with an unlikely swoop for Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva by reports in the foreign media.

Man City have offloaded several first-team players this summer, many to top-six rivals. Silva is the next one facing an uncertain future, despite his contract having three years remaining on it.

There have been links with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain for the Portugal international. Pep Guardiola has promised he will not stand in Silva’s way if he wishes to leave.

But would that be the case if he was to join title rivals Liverpool? According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Reds could be contenders along with the likes of Barcelona and PSG.

It is claimed that Jurgen Klopp could consider a swoop for Silva as he seeks to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions.

Having already added Darwin Nunez to his squad, the theory is that Silva could be another player to take their setup to the next level. The pair could link up on the pitch, with Silva supporting the main striker.

But this does seem to be the stuff of fantasy. Although City have been happy to sell players to Chelsea and Arsenal this summer, would their stance be the same with Liverpool?

For three of the past four seasons, City and Liverpool have been the top two clubs in the Premier League. Many class Klopp’s side as the most likely to challenge Guardiola’s men for the main prize this season.

Hence, letting Silva go to Liverpool would be a mistake – one that it is hard to imagine City making.

Man City could leave themselves short by selling Bernardo Silva

They could yet sanction his departure to Barcelona or PSG if Guardiola is to be believed. Even then, though, they would risk cutting their squad depth too much.

Silva started 33 Premier League matches last season, so is clearly more than a rotation player. City cannot afford to leave themselves too short by depriving themselves of such a key player, without having a replacement plan.

Where could Bernardo Silva end up if he moves on from Manchester City?

Liverpool have been tipped to make a move for Manchester City's Bernardo Silva...

There is no doubt Silva could contribute for Liverpool if he was to join them. They are looking for an extra body in midfield who can provide more creativity.

But being realistic, any hopes they would have of landing Silva – if they do at all – would likely be over-optimistic.

It would also go against their plan to wait for a midfield signing until next summer. Furthermore, they already have preferred starters in the winger roles where Silva can also play.

Hence, there are plenty of reasons why this rumour probably has little behind it.
