Liverpool in brand new midfielder link as Klopp considers second Prem chance for Newcastle, Tottenham target
Liverpool have added yet another name to their shortlist of midfield targets, a report has revealed – and it is someone with a troubled past in the Premier League.
Midfield is the main area Liverpool are looking to strengthen during the upcoming summer transfer window. In that territory, they are likely to lose Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on free transfers.
Some other players who will remain under contract have also been under pressure for their performances this season. Therefore, it is time for Liverpool to freshen up the department.
In that regard, they have been linked with a plethora of names. In a recent feature, we gave the lowdown on all the midfielders to have been suggested as Liverpool targets ahead of the summer.
Now, there is a 49th name to consider, after a report from 90min named them as contenders for the signature of Renato Sanches from Paris Saint-Germain.
The former Swansea City flop is only in his debut season at PSG, but has struggled to build momentum so far. Because of a combination of injuries and selection decisions, he has only started three Ligue 1 games.
Despite being under contract until 2027, Sanches is already being linked with a departure from PSG. According to 90min, he has several clubs queuing up for him in the Premier League.
The report lists Liverpool as being among his admirers. Indeed, they are supposedly receiving information about his situation.
Renato Sanches attracts several other suitors
However, the Reds would not have a clear run at signing Sanches. He is also on the radars of Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Wolves, per the report.
Tottenham are looking for cover for the injured Rodrigo Bentancur, while Wolves might be bracing themselves for the departures of Ruben Neves or Matheus Nunes – both of whom are also on Liverpool’s list.
In addition, AC Milan appear to have revived their interest in taking Sanches to Serie A.
It is not yet clear how much money PSG would be looking for to consider selling Sanches. They paid €15million when taking him from Lille last summer.
After 20 appearances and two goals for them so far, it remains to be seen how his value has fluctuated.
But, due to turn 26 in August, the Portugal international might feel ready to prove himself in English football again after failing to do so before.
Indeed, from 15 appearances in a Swansea shirt during the 2017-18 season, Sanches failed to score and only provided one assist.
He began rebuilding his career with Lille between 2019 and 2022. But he won’t want to lose that momentum he was finally getting back. Thus, he might have to consider his PSG future.
At his current club, he has to compete with the likes of Marco Verratti, Fabian Ruiz, Danilo Pereira, Vitinha and Carlos Soler for a place. All of those players have started more league games than Sanches this season – as has teenager Warren Zaire-Emery.
