‘Can you say the same for City?’ – Chris Sutton claims ‘formidable’ Liverpool have major advantage

Luis Diaz has given Liverpool a new dimension and Manchester City are missing that key boost ahead of a massive few weeks, according to Chris Sutton.

The two clubs have forged an intense rivalry in recent seasons for the Premier League title. The battle between the duo took off in 2018/19, when 97-point Liverpool lost out to 98-point City.

Liverpool won the title a year later, but it was then Man City‘s turn to romp to top spot in 2021.

This season, the two clubs a point apart with nine games left. And one of those is a showdown between the pair at the Etihad Stadium.

What’s more, the two clubs will face off for a second time in April. That clash is for a place in the FA Cup final.

Liverpool have long faced criticism for a lack of squad depth compared to City. However, Sutton has claimed that the Reds’ January signing of Diaz is a boost City cannot match.

“Their front line is so formidable,” the pundit told BBC Radio 5 Live. “[Roberto] Firmino, you look at the number of Premier League games Firmino has started this season, he’s not even into double figures.

“They have [Diogo] Jota, they have [Mohamed] Salah, they have [Sadio] Mane, they have Diaz who I think is unbeaten in the Liverpool jersey so far. He has started so so well.

“He has hit the ground running, he has improved Liverpool, he has given them an extra dimension, can you say the same for City?”

Diaz has scored two goals for the Reds so far, but his work off the ball has also been hailed.

Jamie Carragher added recently that he thinks the arrival of the Colombian international from Porto has given Liverpool a huge lift.

Tottenham and West Ham both came close to signing him in January. However, Klopp’s side swooped in for a long-term target.

Klopp noted earlier this year that Liverpool and City are driving each other to “insane” levels.

And those levels will likely be raised again in the next few weeks. The win for City in January 2019 ultimately turned the title race, but the result’s true impact was unclear at the time.

Still, the reality of the two sides meeting at the business end of this season is much clearer.

A win for either side will provide a massive boost in the title race. And that is before the two sides meet again for a place in the FA Cup final.

Diaz has impressed for Liverpool so far and will likely prove just as crucial in the next few weeks.
