Team-mates ‘very proud’ as exciting forward attracts Liverpool, Man Utd transfer interest

Cody Gakpo of PSV

Team-mates of Liverpool and Manchester United target Cody Gakpo have revealed they are ‘very proud’ of the 22-year-old for attracting interest from the Premier League.

PSV Eindhoven star Gakpo has been in great form this season, registering 13 goals and 13 assists in 33 matches so far. That includes a goal and assist during the recent 5-0 thrashing of Vitesse, during which Gakpo captained the side.

The left winger, who can also operate on the right flank or at centre-forward, is now a full Netherlands international. He is on one goal from four caps as things stand and looks set for a bright future with the Oranje.

In January, reports revealed preliminary talks had been held between Liverpool and Gakpo’s entourage. Manchester City soon joined the race for his services, forcing PSV chief John de Jong to admit that an exit would take place in the future.

And according to the Daily Mirror, United are now trying to prize the attacker away from the Eredivisie. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick is personally pushing for the Red Devils to sign him.

Gakpo is clearly going to be the subject of an intense transfer battle once the summer window gets underway.

Cody Gakpo impresses PSV team-mates

PSV team-mates Armando Obispo and Jordan Teze have now weighed in on Gakpo’s exit links. Obispo told Dutch outlet Voetbal International (via Sport Witness): “Of course, that makes us very proud.

“To be honest, I did expect that he would become so good, but not that his development would go so fast that he could already show it at the Dutch national team. But we are on the pitch with him every day; we know what Cody can do.”

Tchouameni will leave Monaco this summer with Real Madrid and Barcelona out of the race as they focus on Mbappe and Haaland. Chelsea and Manchester United are favourites for France midfielder

Teze added: “Cody is having a good season, and we still have some way to go.

“There are good things coming for him. It’s great that his name is being linked with big clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool. That’s an example of how we want it in the end.”

Jurgen Klopp clarifies Harvey Elliott stance

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp promised to speak with Harvey Elliott after he celebrated with a flare on Sunday.

Elliott came off the bench in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea to replace captain Jordan Henderson. He went on to net a spot-kick in the nail-biting shootout victory over the Blues at Wembley.

However, Elliott later courted controversy when seen celebrating while holding a flare on the pitch.

The Liverpool Echo claimed that had resulted in Elliott being written to by the FA who are seeking clarification on his actions. And at his Tuesday press conference, Klopp insisted he’ll talk with the youngster.

Klopp said: “I didn’t speak to Harvey yet. Will I? Yes.

“Harvey is a very young man on the pitch and off it he is more of a young boy. 100% I will tell him not to do it again. But do I think it’s the worst thing in football? No.”
