Cody Gakpo comments rule one of Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal out of £42m transfer race

PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo lifting the KNVB Cup

Cody Gakpo remains a transfer target for Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal, though the winger’s latest comments have shed light on where he won’t be going.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a break-out season with PSV Eindhoven. Gakpo concluded the Eredivisie campaign with 12 goals and 13 assists from 27 appearances. However, arguably his greatest impact came when preventing Erik ten Hag’s Ajax from securing a Dutch double.

Gakpo scored the winning goal as PSV upset Ajax in the KNVB cup final. That no doubt aided his cause when later awarded the Dutch Player of the Year for 2021-22 (Eredivisie-based players only).

The forward is clearly a player trending in the right direction and predictably, he has drawn links with England’s big hitters.

Arsenal were linked with a move in January when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future was up in the air.

Liverpool and Manchester United have also been mentioned alongside a summer swoop. That’s despite Gakpo only signing a new contract at PSV in January that extended his stay to 2026.

Now, the Daily Mail reaffirm all three clubs’ interest in a swoop. Their article also suggests a move would cost his respective suitor a fee of around £42m.

However, when recently speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Gakpo dropped a hint on what will determine who he’ll join – if indeed he leaves PSV.

Qatar 2022 on his mind

Gakpo has been a regular in the Netherlands national team squads since making his debut in 2021. With the Qatar World Cup on the horizon in late 2022, Gakpo stated key in his mind will be joining a team that won’t harm his international ambitions.

In other words, he wishes to join a club where he’ll play week in, week out.

“Anything can happen this summer,” said the lively winger.

“I will now calmly compare all the options and see what is best for me. Staying another year is also an option.

“It would be a shame if I went somewhere where I wouldn’t get a job at all and I could miss the World Cup. I’ll keep that in mind.”

Cody Gakpo to Liverpool doesn’t add up

As a right-footed left winger, one of his three English suitors would appear to be a poor fit.

Liverpool already have both Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz that fill that role. Mane has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, though one observer stressed why the Reds shouldn’t be worried.

Despite his obvious talents, it’s impossible to see how a move to Anfield wouldn’t result in significant time on the bench.

The same, however, cannot be said for moves to either Old Trafford or the Emirates.
