Liverpool told to break the bank and sign ‘rare’ Chelsea star who gives Klopp something he does not have

Jurgen Klopp, Arsenal v Liverpool March 2022

Liverpool have been urged to break the bank to bring ‘outstanding’ Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher to Anfield this summer.

The midfielder has been an absolute revelation on loan at Crystal Palace this season and was excellent in winning his first England start in the 2-1 friendly victory over Switzerland on Saturday.

The 22-year-old all-action star has scored eight Premier League goals this season in a Palace side that is well clear of relegation trouble and through to the FA Cup sem-finals.

Unfortunately for Gallagher he won’t be allowed to face his parent club at Wembley due to the loan agreement.

But with Chelsea in the midst of a takeover doubts have emerged as to whether they may have to sell some of their top stars.

Whilst Gallagher has still to make his mark at Stamford Bridge, he is expected to be given his chance next season.

However, talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino believes the midfielder is exactly the sort of player Liverpool need.

“Conor Gallagher is an outstanding attacking midfielder who always looks like he’s going to get a goal or make an assist,” Cascarino told Weekend Sports Breakfast.

“I like him because I don’t think there’s too many of his type around.

“Liverpool, for me, if they had a player like that as well adding him behind their front three, with his ability to get goals.

“Chelsea would never sell him to Liverpool, but they’d do really well with him.

“Conor Gallagher will get goals. Whether or not he will get his chance at Chelsea, I don’t know. No one at Chelsea can do what he does. But it depends if Thomas Tuchel wants to play that kind of player in his system.

“I hope he does give him a chance.”

Southgate thrilled with Gallagher display

Three Lions boss was also impressed with what he saw against the Swiss, adding: “I saw what I see for his club really. I thought his pressing was excellent. He has tremendous energy . When he goes he doesn’t just get close to people, he wins the ball back and turns it over.

“He played one fabulous pass for Harry Kane.

“Some other bits of his in possession could have been tidier. But he should be really happy with his debut.”

Legendary England left-back was also an interested observer at Wembley and loved what he saw.

He told talkSPORT: “Gallagher was the pick [of the debutants]. The hour he had he impressed. Plenty of energy as you would expect and he took his club form onto the international stage.

“Behind him, [Marc] Guehi had a solid game and got better and better as the game went on.

“England improved in the second half. When they made the substitutes they went up to another level as well to get us over the line.”
