Liverpool confirm Darwin Nunez signing as shirt number is revealed and club-record signing speaks out

Darwin Nunez Liverpool transfer from Benfica announced

Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica for what will become a club-record fee.

Nunez has signed a six-year contract with Liverpool, so will be theirs until 2028. A Benfica statement had already confirmed that the Premier League giants have paid £64m (€75m) for his services, which could rise to £85.3m (€100m) with bonuses.

In return, Liverpool have acquired the services of one of the most highly rated centre-forwards in the world, after he passed a medical on Monday.

Nunez scored an impressive 34 goals from 41 games for Benfica in the 2021-22 season. His tally included two against his new employers in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp never hid his admiration for the 22-year-old, whom he will now get the chance to work with.

Nunez is expected to feature regularly as a centre-forward for Liverpool, replacing the exit-linked Sadio Mane in between Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, in an exciting front line.

The new arrival will wear the number 27 shirt – with his deal subject to international clearance and the granting of a work permit.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the striker admitted his delight at confirming the move.

“I’m really happy and delighted to be here at Liverpool. It’s a massive club,” Nunez said.

‘A pleasure to be at Liverpool’

“I’d like to thank my partner and my parents and my son, who is a real source of pride for me. They’ve been really important to me in the stages in my career. I’m really proud of them, and for the work we do, me and my partner, as a team and I’m grateful to her that I’m here.

“It’s a pleasure to be here in Liverpool and I’m very happy to be a part of this great club.

“I’ve played against Liverpool and I’ve seen them in lots of games in the Champions League. And it’s my style of play. There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play here.

“As I say, I’ve watched quite a lot and it’s a very big club. I hope I can give everything that I’ve got in order to help the team.”

Nunez becomes the third Uruguayan to play for Liverpool after Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates.

Indeed, the striker has been compared to both a hybrid version of Suarez and another famous Uruguayan, Edinson Cavani.

Revealing his aims for the club, he says he hopes to help them continue in their recent trophy success.

“When I arrived at the training ground, I was really surprised to see the set-up and the structure and all the trophies here,” he added. “You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies. Then later on when you come here again and see the trophies on display, you can say, ‘Look, I was a part of that, I was there at that time, winning trophies.’

“That’s one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool – to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool.”

Darwin Nunez perfect for Liverpool

Liverpool’s deal for Nunez is a standout one on two fronts. The Reds of course needed to replace Mane, who has scored 120 goals in his six seasons at Anfield.

And they have done that with a striker who, at the age of 22, is yet to reach his full potential but who has shown so much already.

Darwin Nunez details revealed

Liverpool have a agreed a deal for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez in a deal worth up to £85 million.

Meanwhile, the Nunez deal is also a big response to Manchester City’s acquisition of Haaland. Liverpool’s title rivals have got themselves a new fearsome forward – but now so have the Reds themselves.

It means they stand every chance of keeping pace with the champions again. As such, it promises to be another thrilling title battle in the 2022-23 season.
