Liverpool done deal: PSV announce record transfer fee to confirm stunning Anfield deal for top Man Utd January target

Netherlands strikers Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay

PSV have announced they have reached an agreement with Liverpool over the proposed transfer of top Manchester United target Cody Gakpo.

The Netherlands attacker starred at the World Cup, scoring three goals in Qatar, and is now on his way to England to finalise a switch to Merseyside.

“PSV and Liverpool have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo,” an official club statement read.

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

PSV general manager Marcel Brands confirmed Gakpo’s anticipated transfer would be a “record” for the Eredivisie club.

Hirving Lozano’s move to Napoli in 2019 for a reported 42 million euros was the previous highest sale by the Dutch outfit.

A club statement added: “Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee.”

“But this is a record transfer for PSV,” said general manager Brands.

The actual fee is believed to be an initial payment of £37million that could eventually rise to £50m.

Liverpool catch United napping in Gakpo chase

The speed in which the transfer has progressed clearly caught Manchester United napping, as they have been the form frontrunners for Gakpo’s signature for some time.

Indeed, Erik ten Hag was keen on bringing in the Netherlands forward to supplement an attack that is now without the released Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Liverpool have delivered a hammer blow to the Red Devils, as they did almost a year ago to Tottenham in their chase for Luis Diaz.

Spurs thought they had a deal in the bag for the winger, who Liverpool wanted to wait and bring in last summer. That interest prompted Anfield transfer chiefs into immediate action as they jumped in ahead of the north London side to seal what has proved to be an impressive addition to Klopp’s squad.
