Liverpool would be an appealing destination for two of Europe’s brightest talents, claims a former player who has urged them to consider transfers to Anfield.
Liverpool have had a good record in the transfer market in recent years. Major investments like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker have definitely paid off. Then, there have been shrewd signings for smaller sums, like Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez.
But their spending has slowed down in recent years as they aim to stick within a low net spend. In the summer, they only made one signing, bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.
There are still areas of the squad that could be considered for strengthening in future transfer windows. For example, no replacement was brought in for departing midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in the summer.
In addition, many still believe Jurgen Klopp’s squad lacks an out-and-out centre-forward.
It remains to be seen what kind of players they will be pursuing to fill those roles. But they are likely to look to the long-term.
Their former defender Glen Johnson has now advised them to make two high-profile signings from the same club.
Johnson namechecked striker Erling Haaland and midfielder Jude Bellingham as the players Liverpool should be looking at in a double raid on Borussia Dortmund, which he feels would also be beneficial for the two young superstars.
“I’d love to see Haaland and Bellingham at Liverpool,” Johnson is quoted as saying by the Express, speaking via William Hill.
“They are two young guys who are built for the Premier League and for a club like Liverpool.
“They could develop over the years under a manager like Jurgen Klopp and I could see them becoming massive names in football for a long, long time.
“There’ll be competition from other clubs across Europe for sure, but I think it’d be appealing to come to Anfield, challenge for trophies and work under a top-class manager like Klopp.”
Haaland is one of the most in-demand footballers in the world. He has scored 70 goals in 69 games for Dortmund.
A release clause will be active in his contract next summer, worth less than his true market value. Therefore, there will be plenty of interest in his signature.
Bellingham, meanwhile, has been impressing since leaving Birmingham City for Germany. The midfielder, still only 18, has become an England international and is a regular at club level.
It seems he will return to his native country at some point in the future. Several clubs will be interested in luring him back and Liverpool should be among them.
Dortmund detail Bellingham transfer stance
While Haaland’s release clause means Dortmund may be powerless in their attempts to keep him, they are in a stronger position regarding Bellingham.
He is under contract until 2025 and they will not be pressured into selling him on the cheap. In fact, reports have suggested he may cost more than £100m.
Dortmund chief Sebastien Kehl, who played for the club between 2002 and 2015 – including during Klopp’s time there – recently confirmed their stance with the Englishman.
“There’s lot of interest around Jude Bellingham, not only Liverpool,” Kehl told Sport1.
“But there is no bottom line and no exit clause.
“He is loved, he enjoys that. There are no signs he could leave BVB soon.”
Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga after nine games, in part thanks to the efforts of Haaland and Bellingham. They would likely strengthen a Liverpool side who are also second in their league, with the same number of points after the same number of games.
Whoever manages to sign Haaland or Bellingham will be getting huge talents who can be at the forefront of a generation.
